Hi all

This is my first post as i just bought my first Audi after being talked into it by my boss.
i have a A4 1.9 TDI estate and i love it, should have made the switch years ago ,anyway in order for me to buy parts for me to do a service i need to know if its a avant how can i tell? does it just mean its an estate or is it a certain model, this may sound daft to you guys but hey its only easy if you know it

Welcome and yes this is a great model .Avant is just Audi name for an estate version and is identical for servicing .What history do you have and what servicing have you in mind?

great choice of car, just make sure you use the correct grade of oil as anything less will soon destroy your pride and joy.

Yes, 5w 40 is the way to go - £40 per gallon for Millers XFE-PD!!

the millers mentioned above is pd oil, which will be to the right spec, which is 501.something which escapes my memory right now, but not all 5/40 is though. also, its a good idea to change it at less than the 10k recommended. i think 6 k is good. pd engines are hard on their oil, since the cam runs the pd unit injectors which pressurise the diesel to 20,000 psi.

I'd use the oil to the spec the manual suggests personally, which is more likely to be 5W-30 - something to VW507 or similar (though the book may say VW505, the 507 replaces it).

Suggest only using a genuine pollen filter btw.

Cheers,
Dan.

I thought that the spec was VW505, hence the above advice. Learn something new every day!

Depends on whether it's on variable or time/distance. From memory, it was 505 for time/distance and 505.01 or something for longlife - and I think that was the diff between the oils at the time - may have been that some oils were 5w-40 but met the "time/distance" spec. I'm sure someone will come along and correct that shortly if I'm wrong :)

When you go to any Audi dealers these days they use the same oil anyway whether it's on fixed or longlife - you nearly always get 5W-30 that's suitable for both service intervals. Many folks on here use the same stuff on time/distance as it's a v/good oil.

Personally, I'm using Exol Optima LSV which you can get quite reasonably on ebay if you don't have access to Quantum or similar cheap - as the Castrol stuff is still pretty damn expensive in comparison.

Dan.

Must say 505.01 not 505.00 for a pd,the .01 at the end is vital, good choice of car,and welcome to the forum.

Thus the 507 suggestion, as it replaced both of them :) No chance of getting it wrong then....

Not having a dig,but there's a lot of oil out there and retailers who will sell the wrong stuff.
