There are a number of gotchas in here for anyone considering it....

1. Phone needs Sim Access Profile for any benefit over bluetooth Low. I'm not sure there is a phone on the market other than the odd old Nokia that has this. Certainly the iphone, windows phone, most Androids don't have this but happy for someone to prove me wrong!

2. I assumed you could get round this by putting a 3G Sim in the sim reader (eg a £10/month 3G card) to make Google maps / wifi hotspot / info services etc work, but then read this in the small print

"Please note that when a data SIM card is inserted into the SIM card reader, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity is disconnected, as the SIM card takes priority over the Bluetooth connection."

So its a completely useless extra?? You are hardly going to dismantle your phone to get the sim out everytime you get in the car especially how difficult that is these days!

Game over...... Who the hell designs these systems and then which idiot lets them put them on the market?

Full Blurb from the Audi Configurator - the only thing that seems to list it!

YOUR BENEFITS

Full access by the vehicle of the SIM card in the mobile phone and the telephone entries stored there

Makes it possible for all passengers to surf the internet with their own terminal device (e.g. laptop, netbook, iPad, etc) via a Wi-Fi hotspot

The driver always has access to up-to-date information from the internet (e.g. news, navigation, weather, etc)

Convenient control via the MMI, multifunction steering wheel or voice commands

Allows convenient use of the telephone, simple connection and perfect integration of mobile phones.

A mobile phone can be connected to the internal UMTS (3G) module via Bluetooth (provided the mobile telephone has SIM Access Profile), or alternatively through the additional SIM card reader. It is possible to transfer phone book entries to the car and manage call lists. Audi connect features include: navigation using Google Earth images and Google Street View, destination entry via Google Maps or myAudi, online point of interest search and information services such as weather forecasts and the latest world news. Audi connect also includes Audi traffic information online, which gives exact and accurate real-time forecasts of the traffic situation along the chosen route.

The traffic situation can be displayed on the navigation map or Google Earth image. Audi connect can also create a Wi-Fi hotspot in the car for convenient internet access using a mobile device (e.g. laptop or tablet). Many Audi connect features can be simply operated via the MMI Navigation Plus, the multi-function steering wheel or the voice control system.

Only in combination with Technology package – High or Advanced (WB7 or PCB).
To check the compatibility of your mobile phone and if it has SIM Access Profile compatibility, please visit www.audi.co.uk/owners-area/phone-compatibility.html

Please note that when a data SIM card is inserted into the SIM card reader, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity is disconnected, as the SIM card takes priority over the Bluetooth connection.

Online services are only available for mobile phone contracts including a data option and only within the coverage of the mobile phone network; there may be additional costs for the use of these services (charges and billing correspond to the personal mobile phone contract). Due to high data volumes, a mobile phone contract including an unlimited data plan is strongly recommended. The content and scope of the online-based services offered may vary.
