There are a lot of horror stories out there about changing the fuel filter on the 2.5 TDI so, as I have just done it, I thought I'd add to the knowledge base.

You will need
1 x Filter - I used a UFI 2442400 (from opie oils) - £20.16 inc vat
2 x Jubilee Clips size 16 (if not already fitted with Jubilee Clips)
1 x 10mm spanner (easier with flex head rachet)
Screwdriver and Pliers to remove clips
about 1 litre of clean fuel

I also bought a filter valve from Audi - Valve 057 127 247 J - £22.81 inc vat
This was incase the old one broke on removal
If this happens you may need
2 x Jubilee Clips size 12

I understand that this model does not have a lift pump, the injection pump sucks the fuel from the tank. So to help this I filled the tank before starting work.

1 - Clamp all 4 hoses close to the filter as above.
2 - Remove the back 2 hoses.
3 - Remove the clip and prise the valve up from the bottom with a large screwdriver.
DO NOT PULL ON THE HOSES
4 - undo the 10mm filter clamp nut and remove the old filter.
5 - Position new filter in holder.
6 - Fill with clean fuel - it will take about a litre.
7 - connect hoses and tighten clips.
8 - check filter is full of fuel.
9 - carefully push valve into position - (new o'ring is on new filter)
10 - tighten the 10mm filter clamp nut.
11 - remove all hose clamps.
12 - start engine.

Engine started straight away, I ran at 2000 revs for a couple of minutes but there was no stuttering or hesitation at all.

From start to finish 20 mins - next time will be a lot quicker.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks Again
I need to do mine as I have had starting issues when engine is warm , after 45mins or so and the car has been standing the car just refuses to start . Error code is 01376 which refers to rpm sensor .Someone on the forum has suggested that I change the fuel filter as this could be old and dirty as it sounds like diesel starvation . If I leave the car standing for another half hour or so without continuosly trying to start the car she will start . I have also in the interim changed the temp sensor unit but this hasnt helped although i was so angry the other day i threw a bucket of water over the engine and thereafter the car started straight away which seems to be telling me its a heating problem .
Any other suggestions maybe

That's fantastic - thank you. I would like to know where the diesel 'goes' when you take the filter out if it needs a liter to refill it??

I wonder how long the engine would last without this filter - maybe the one in the tank would save you? (and I mean leaving all the 'hard' bits like the rings in place and just pulling all the paperwork/filter out) - just wondering ... :)

The diesel stays in the filter as long as you don't tip it sideways where it can flow out of the two pipes or the top valve hole.
Refilling before starting is one way, but the way I have done it is to use my Pela pump connected to the pipe going to the injection pump and pumped until fuel flowed into the pela pump this filled the filter with diesel as well. Like mentioned above no issues on startup.
You do not want to fill your new filter with the diesel in the old filter as there may be water present. I brought my old filter and diesel within it to the local hazard disposal.
