My wipers have gone really slow so I was investigating the mechanism and found under the plastic scuttle was a plastic tube like washer tubing not connected to anything, it's by the battery and appears between the 2 heater hoses where they come up. I couldn't see anywhere that it should be connected to. Anyone know? It's a 2000 1.8T AWT engine.

Could be a battery breather-pipe

Ok, probably nothing to worry about then, I expect the battery hasn't got a vent to connect to. Cheers

The tube is a battery fume vent, you have a seized drivers side wiper spindle, fit a new frame or ponce around stripping it down and rebuilding it.

I doused the drivers side spindle with oil and it's helped only slightly, didn't actually strip it down. PM me with a price as it might be the best option. Cheers
