Hello,
This is my first post on this forum so I hope I have posted in the right place. This looks to be a very helpful forum http://www.audi-forums.com/style_emoticons/default/beer.gif

I have just got myself an A4 Avant 03 plate 2.0.
It's a lovely car and is as new, anyhow-the car only came with 1 key, so I browsed Ebay other night and won an auction for a blank key (ready to be cut) with 3 button remote (ready to be programmed).

Can I presume this can be cut at a good locksmiths or at a dealer?
Also will it have to be re programmed by an Audi dealer or can it be done without somehow?
lastly how much is it approx to get the key cut and re programmed?

Many thanks in advance.

Programming remote unit

- Switch ignition ON.

- Lock vehicle mechanically at left front door using second key.

- Press "Open" button on first remote unit (key fob) once (to assign memory address to remote unit number one).

Note: The alarm horn will sound briefly each time the "Open" button is pressed to confirm the reception of the signal during this process.

- Wait six seconds after sending last signal, then press "Open" button again.

^ Doors will now unlock (remote unit is now programmed).

- Lock vehicle mechanically again using second key.

- Press "Open" button on second remote unit (key fob) twice at 1 second intervals (to assign memory address to remote unit number two).

- Wait six seconds after sending last signal, then press unlock button again.

^ Doors will now unlock (2nd transmitter is now programmed).

- Repeat procedure for additional remote units (key fobs) to assign memory addresses number 3 and 4 if necessary.

- Switch ignition OFF.

- Check each transmitter for proper function

Dealers gotta cut em, at least here in the US. You will also need to have them program the immobilizer so it will have permission to start the car.

Dealers always program the lock and unlock features at the same time (as seen above is correct I believe).

I bought 02 a4 avant sport-130 in august from audi dealer in carlisle which came with 1 key so they ordered me a new one. As i stay near edinburgh i was able to take it there to get coded- £102 but audi in carlisle reimbursed me.

To program the key for the ignition (once it's cut) - Using vagcom - turn on car using current good key. Enter section 17, central convenience, then adaption over on the right hand side. I believe it asks for the 4 digit pin code here. Then channel 23 I believe, and change the 1 to a 2. Then turn off vag com, turn off ignition, and turn back on again - This has programmed #1 key, turn off and remove key, insert new key and turn on - this has programmed #2 key. Welcome to spare key ownership. :D Hopefully I will finally have a spare soon too.

devon, dont you need the SKC code to do the above? sorry if im hijacking, but i just contacted my local vw dealer for a price to code my key to alarm and immo, she then asked where id got the key from, when i said id bought it from an 'alternative' outlet, she told me they wouldnt touch the key unless it was supplied by them!

Hi
Just had the same problem with a 1997 A4 avant i got at auction.
Only 1 key was supplied with the car.
I went into the local key cutter (Timpsons) and he cut me a new key and coded it for £30.
This is a non plip key, but will make an ideal spare.

DON'T DO THIS - YOU COULD WIPE THE ORIGINAL KEY

KEYS ARE MATCHED TO THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER NOT CONVENIENCE SYSTEM AND A 7 DIGIT PIN IS NEEDED REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU MAY HAVE HEARD...

MAIN DEALER ONLY OR A GOOD INDEPENDENT WITH VAS 505X.

Vag-Com can do the job but you need the code, which is only available through VAS 505X with online connection.

(PS. VAS 505X DOES NOT DISPLAY THIS CODE) it's a secret...!

Well, I programmed my own key using vag com....?

It may not have been central convenience, could have been somewhere else. It definitely is not a dealer only option, because I've done it. It was just so long ago I can't remember the route through. I only needed the 4 digit code to access my ECU - I have this code stored in my service schedule for when ECU access is needed (i.e not often)

Hi,

It's ok for you to use the 4 digit pin; Skoda are not yet using the GeKo System for programming using the 7 digit pin. There is talk that they soon will.

Thanks Audi4man - I reprogrammed both remote keys and it was exactly as you said. Look no further for your answer chaps

I too need a spare key for peace of mind.
Can someone confirm that it is possible to re-programme a second-hand Audi key to the immobiliser (assuming part numbers match). My dealer has told me it's not possible once the key has been 'burnt' to a previous car. If this is the case, then all of the second-hand Audi remote keys on EBay are virtually useless!

Yes that's correct, but..you can fit a new chip for about £2.50 which will allow a new coding to work.

Thanks, that's very interesting. Why did they not mention that, do you think? Are the chips freely available, or are they a 'dealer only' item?

How do you open the flip key without damaging the fob ? I know that its easy to change the transponder on non flip keys.

You probably want an AKTP2

Split the key in half separating the flip-key from the remote.
Lift the VW logo on the key half with a knife and undo the screw.
Prise it apart.....

Thanks Lex, it's all becoming clearer. Sorry I'm a bit slow. I have had so many conflicting stories. I have now been told by an 'unauthorised seller' of these keys that the pre-2006 keys can be re-programmed without changing chips. Who is correct? Dealer or 'unauthorised seller'? I suppose at that price for a new chip it doesn't really matter anyway.

Do you need 2 people to do this?! How do you lock vehicle mechanically at left front door? From outside? Be gentle with me!

I could not recode the key I had bought on my 2002 Passat till I changed the chip.
I think the breakpoint is IMMO3 which came with the B5.5

This will sound obvious once I type it, took me a while to figure it out......wind the window down first ;)

On the reprogramming of keys I bought mine of ebay and it works fine, but my year of audi has Immo2 and I have the SKC code (4 digit) I guess that VAG have changed the system for security.

Hi Rob! Ouch! :D I'm really gonna try it now. The font left door isn't the DRIVERS DOOR is it?! ;)

Oh I didn't see that it was suggested using the front left door, I actully match mine using the driver door lock. I don't think it matters which door.

It is tricky to do though, when I match mine i ended up with the new remote working and not the old one then none then both. so perservere if it doesn't work first time.

Hi,

Should you disable the interior monitor should the car have one? I guess the process is so quick you shouldnt need to.

Cheers.

The alarm won't be a problem, I just read the post with the instruction and he forgot to clearly say that the new key needs to be in the ignition key hole and turned on. you then press the button on the remote after locking the door with the second key.

Hi

My remote started playing up recently on my Audi a4 (2005) so i changed the battery. After changing the battery i am unable to unlock or open the door from the remote control fob, i am having to use the key to open and lock the door. After opening the door from the key, if i don't insert the key in the ignition the alarm starts going off. I have tried to reync the remote all different ways stated on the forum but have had no joy. I have the same issue with the spare. Can anyone help i would greatly appreciate your expertise.

This is the proper proceedure.

Hi Patrick i have tried the above procedure and it failed. i took the car to Audi and said they need to run a full diagnostics on the car.
I took it a local specialist who tried a couple of things and said the remote control fobs for my audi are for a A3 model and not A4. The diagnostics did not pick up any faults. I still await the outcome.

I received my new Cube key from ebay, and it looks exactly like the original. I printed the directions, and thought I'd go out and program it.
One step was left out of the directions: have the key cut. I could insert it into the lock, but I wouldn't be able to turn it to ACC without having it cut. When I do have it cut, I'll go to a Locksmith (http://www.bloomingdalelocksmiths.net/). If the local hardware store messes up, it will cost me $48 for a new key. A Locksmith will (hopefuilly) do a better job. It's been pouring for two days, so I'll wait to do this.

I also only had one key come with the car. I bought a new key from Audi in Nottingham for around £150 with another £60 for Audi to code the key to the car.

To be short, Audi in Nottingham failed on 2 separate, hour long sessions, to get the car to accept the new key. Thankfully they did not charge me for the 2 hours. They were sorry, but could not offer any solution save to carry out (a never ending?) further diagnosis at my expense.

I followed the list of directions as offered by AudiA4man in the second post of this thread and lo, both keys now operate perfectly. So, in the end I saved £60 but lost 2 hours of my life, although I was offered limitless coffee!
