I'm Ordering a New A4 Avant Tdi Sline Next month(Ireland) And Trying to figure out which BHP to choose and if some BHP Models cause more Problems than others, I'm Stuck Between 136/143 or the 177bhp... Both are pretty Much Same Tax Band and MPG.. Would Be greatful for Advice.

Thanks in Advance

Depends what you're used to. The 143 is ok and if you are purchasing from new will be slow to begin with then it will improve all the way to 20,000 miles.
I feel the 143 is a decent amount of power for every day use but does not set the heather on fire.

Best thing to do is try and get an extended test drive of both and see how you get on.

Many A4's in the ROI are 120bhp (in basic trim) although I have noticed quite a few UK spec cars reaching the second hand market now (mainly S Line). I have a 143bhp Avant and find the performance adequate - especially when tearing away from the toll booth on the M1 :-) It really comes down to what you are happiest with, the amount that you are willing to pay and road tax etc

Excellent thanks for the replies. Yeah I think I will go with the 143 the 177 is almost 4
K more expensive. And between extras etc not worth it.

Ive got a TDI 143 and had a TDI 170 as a loan car recently, couldn't see any real difference and had to actually look up what engine the car had in it.

If cost is a consideration, but you would like the performance, think about getting the 143 then having it tuned to c170.

My Fear is that the A4 Sline with extras such as Alarm which don't come as standard in ROI its going to be about 47500k for 52k i can get a sline A6...

I'm guessing you don't want quattro? I wanted 4 wheel drive which limited my engine choice to the most powerful 2.0.

Had they done a 143 in quattro I would have probably taken it especially if I could have had auto too!

Don't really need Quattro Tbh, I'm looking into getting a A6 for 5000euro more wondering it is worth the extra money...

Heresy I know but...the A6 is based upon a newer platform and, I think, model for model, has more equipment....only problem may be that if you get the A6 you'll be buying a relatively new model and all manufacturers can suffer from teething troubles whereas the A4 B8 has been around a while and a lot of the problems have been ironed out.
