My A4 Avant is out of power steering fluid again. This has happened to me before.

It was empty back in Sept 2011 @ 120,994 miles
It's now empty again Feb 2012 @ 125,356 miles
It was serviced Nov 2011 (Power Steering was not looked at).

A guy I work with noticed some fluid on the road outside work underneat my car, he thought I might have an oil leak.

Does this smell of a steering fluid leak ? Maybe on the rack ? I've heard the racks are not repairable, you have to have a new one circa £900 !!

And, if I want to top the fluid up, can I buy some from Halfords ?

They usually leak at the seals on the hydraulic arm, but make sure its not a hose.

You can get a rebuilt exchange rack for about £130, fitting cost would depend on who's doing it.

I've heard of a specialist rack place in Glasgow that does the whole thing for about £220,
cant remember the name.

My son had this on his S3 and it was the metal cooler pipe that had a leak in the bend .

Audi use G002000 hydraulic mineral fluid.

The garage man says its a leak on the power steering pump, and it will be a cool £393 to get the job done.

WOWSERS !!
