What is the recommended running in period for a 140 SE estate?

Engine 1000 miles. Details in instruction book. Also information about running in brake pads and tyres in the book. However, my dealer said that hardly anybody bothers and that many company and hire cars are driven flat out from day one with no adverse effects.
I remember, many years ago, seeing cars with a window sticker that read 'Running In - Please Pass'. That was before the advent of number plates that gave away the date of registration, it was the only way of telling other drivers that you had a new car! You also had to change the oil after a few miles.

Just don't go mad for the 1000 miles. Don't thrash it or let it labour, use varying revs and different throttle loads during the first 1000 miles.

Stuck to the above myself and at 23000 miles it's not used a single drop of oil between services, runs smooth with good perfomance and economy.

Cheers
