View Full Version : What's the average age of an A6/A7 driver?

Here's something I have been wondering for a while, what is the average age of an A6/A7 driver. I would guess at 30s/40s. So fellas (and ladies) what is your approx age?

MFGF
20-02-2012, 10:28 PM
I had my first A6 in my mid 30s. It was a new C5 1.8T Sport. Since then I have had two more A6 C6s and I am about to get a C7... If you factor in an average ownership of about three years per car, that makes me... um... 29! And a bit! :-)

Well bought the C7 at 26. I got my C6 at 24. Needed a large car at the time to lug all my military kit when I was in the forces. Did a great job, Quattro was great down in Devon in the winters.

A6 C6, 36. Bought when I was 35 due to the massive amount of stuff I had to lug around in the boot at the time).

Luck of the draw with the company pool - then got spoiled - do a fair bit of mileage and got used to the huge boot on the A6 when scuba diving.

I was coming up for a difficult decision as the list had tanked & would have have had to pay £5k personally to get a new A6 which wasn't going to happen - it was Passat or Skoda time.

Then changed jobs & had to buy a car - was looking at new ones given the pcp dealer deposit contribution but couldn't resist the ex-demo car - the irony is that the old
company just changed to vw Golfs only - lot off majorly ****** old colleagues.....

I can imagine. I would be very annoyed. I've never had a company car. I got my first Audi through a military discount scheme. I was actually not going to buy the C7 I was looking at an XJ, but then decided I was being stupid especially at my age and considering I'm normally in the car by myself! I'm very happy with my choice

My story, then.

I always buy new and keep the car until it starts going wrong (my experience is that after about 120k, things go rapidly from everything being perfect to every MOT being a nightmare.)

My last car was a Rover 75 Touring Connoisseur SE, which I bought 9 years ago having traipsed round the dealers until I found one that made me go "mmmmm...this is nice".

When its springs and shocks failed, I traipsed again - the usual suspects, Merc, BMW, Volvo.

I rejected the thought of Audi because the A6 didn't have ACC, and I was not going to buy anything without.

But I did test drive a Passat. The salesman listened to my needs and suggested that an A6 would be better and that, for the last month, it now had ACC.

TBH, my wife and I bought in the showroom, before the test drive. It was the same thing as the Rover, we just went "mmmm...this is nice", but we dutifully took one for 24 hours, fell in love with it and bought. The only comparisions, BMW 5 Touring, BMW 5GT and Merc E fell miles behind.

I am now borrowing a Petrol S C6 Avant, collecting my C7 Avant on 1st March. It is a very different car - I would have bought an E Class against the C6 - but I know that the C7 was the only choice for me.

Timothy, I bet your looking forward to delivery. I am currently in an Audi lease car as well until mine turns up, I actually can't wait.

I agree with you about the 120k mark, seems like every car I have had that has hit this milestone starts going spectacularly wrong. So now I go for new or nearly new, as long as warrantee is still valid im happy.

Too old!

I was just turning 39 when I purchased my A6 3 years ago ... work out the rest ;)

This was my first Audi, bought the A3 in December 2011 to make my driveway look pretty :approve:

I will buy nothing but Audi from now on, I didn't realise how good a brand they were until I bought the A6.

I do kinda miss rear wheel drive. I do love my A6 but I think this will be my
Last Audi. I try and move brands and cars every few years, mostly because I just like a total departure from what I'm currently driving.

I'm late 50's and on my 3rd A6. Each one has been as a company car through one jointly-funded lease scheme or another.
My first A6 was 12 years ago and that for me was the best. Up until then I'd been in the Ford, Vauxhall end of things company car wise. I really stretched myself to get that A6 and it was just such a massive leap in technology, build quality etc compared to what I had known. I've no idea what generation that would have been (I'm not much of a petrol-head - I've only just become aware I'm in a C7 now.)
At the end of that 3-year lease there were some exceptionally good offers at the time on Volvo S80s, so I switched to one of them for three years. After that, back to another A6 for three years. The last three have seen me in a another Volvo, an XC90. While it was a brilliant vehicle in many ways it must have contributed a fair bit to global warming on its own. Boy, did it love drinking diesel!
And now, as of last month I'm back in an A6. I tested it against the usual suspects - 5-series and E-class. One lucky thing about getting vehicles on lease through my company is that Lex will often make a test car available for a few days rather than just 24 hours or so. The 5-series just did not suit me - I'm about 2m tall and I just couldn't get comfortable at all. I think my expectations of the E-class must have been too high. It was such a disappointment in ride and handling. The A6 was the last one I tried and it was such a feeling of coming home. I'm really pleased with it.

I do know what you mean, I tested the car against the 5 Series and the Mercedes CLS. I was very disappointed in the 5 Series. Having had a previous model the new model lets down. I absolutely hate the Mercedes E class so thought best go with the CLS. Really nice looking car from the outside, however inside is where the car is let down, it feels like mercedes have really raided the parts bin from every other car. To be honest it feels cheap, and in the back hugely claustrophobic. My intention was to go in an buy an A7, in the end I decided to buy and A6 and add a few grands worth of equipment and I am very happy. I got a car that was a bargain and feels very upmarket. There is only one other car that I have car envy for, and that is the new Jaguar XJ. I tested the 5.0 litre super sport and this was in a whole different league, but then it would be its a class ahead and cant be compared to an A6. I did decided that the Jaguar, all be it affordable from new would kill me in fuel and servicing. So I do love the new A6, even though my SE did have a dangerous fault. I am very excited to be awaiting my replacement, this time however i got to re-spec the car. Having driven one for 4 months prior there are things that i wished i had added on first time, such as heated seats, and this time i get to do it all over again.

The best so far is my current car. It is roomy, quiet, comfortable, quick (enough), economical, classy-looking and has lots of nice toys. My least favourite so far was my first C6. It had the 140PS 2.0 TDi PD engine, and it never really felt quite up to the job of hauling such a big car around, plus it had a number of mechanical issues (broken EGR, split intercooler etc). The C5 1.8T was nice - and very well-built. It was the facelift model with revised bumpers and visible exhaust pipes, and I really enjoyed my time with it. I am hoping that I find the C7 to be even better than my current C6. I shall know for sure at the end of April...

I'm 59 and about to retire...

On my third A6, having had 2.5TDI C5, 3.0TDI C6, and currently 3.0TDI C7. All Avant Quattro. Current car about to be replaced due to wrong spec being delivered, and having had the C7 for a week or two been able to up the spec of the replacement to add in a few things that I felt that I should have had.

C5->C6 upgrade was OK, but the C7 feels almost like a different car after the C6. Just that much more refined.

i have a 56 plate 2.0 140 A6 saloon, 58000miles. only had it 2 months, but what a great car. Can't believe how many extras it has. Only downside is it is proving spectacularly unreliable, and is costing the dealer i bought it from a fortune trying to get it up to scratch (they aren't being too helpful either, to make it worse). not looking forward to it coming out of statutory warranty, but still, what a car!!

i am 41, wife is 39 (primary driver. she loves it more than me!!)

I take it George you sorted it out with Audi and did they find the fault on the car,

Also did they give in easy once they knew there was a problem with the car and agreed to replace it straight away

Yep. I look order of a new car last wednesday. They never got the the bottom of the problem, although acklodleged it was serious enough to replace the car. The old one is now on its way back to germany to become a test mule. Lets hope they work out what went wrong and fix it. I guess its like any electronic product, things can go wrong.

I had to kick up a fuss to get the car replace, i took to twitter, facebook, auto express and honest john to make my point. Although once Audi UK accepted the issue they were amazingly helpful and really turned it around. I went from being resentful to a happy customer. Customer service is really where Audi stand out. That said this will be my final audi. Not because I dont like the brand, just because I like to move on and keep things fresh.

The replacement car:

I'm 33 and taking delivery of my first a6 (c7) hopefuly next week.

Having started out very pleased with the deal on the car, I'm currently less than impressed with the whole experience, as the car had a fault light come on when I arrived to collect it last weekend. When I get it next week, it will be two weeks late. I've asked for free gap insurance and service as gesture from audi.

Hopefully the car will make up for the 'new car buyer' experience so far!

as an aside, audi have given me a q5 to use. nice, but not up to the spec/drive of the a6.

TopherGeorge
10-04-2012, 02:40 PM
I guess that was my initial problem. At first I was utterly unimpressed by the levels of service from Audi. initially i was left feeling angry and disappointed. I guess after I made a rather compelling argument using online media and contacting head office they were very nice. But the last few months they have managed to erase the bad memories of old.

Took delivery yesterday of my 7th Audi (3rd A6) and I am 44. Have messed around with other cars but always seem to come home to Audi.
My list over the last 10 years runs like this

A4 B5 1.8T Sport
A6 C6 2.0 TDI S-Line
A4 B7 3.0TDI SE
A4 B7 2.0TDI Quattro S-Line Avant Special Edition
A6 C6 2.0TDI S-Line Avant
A5 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Line
And my new toy A6 C7 3.0TDI Quattro S-Line
Along with these I have had weekend toys (Porsche 996 Carrera 4, Porsche 996 Carrera 4S) and the dog transporters (Range Rover 4.4V8 HSE, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Range Rover Supercharged and currently BMW X3 X-Drive35D Bi Turbo)
But always Audi is where my heart is.

Age Car

18 Vauxhall Viva - Grandma's old car
19 2nd Vauxhall Viva - blew the first one up with over revving - after tuning the tappets very well!
23 Daihatsu Charade GTti - fantastic three pot mental
25 TVR Chimeara - lovely V8
29 TVR Tuscan - mistake, but fast
30 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 4WD - big big big mistake - great car just broke down a lot and expensively, did get to 114,000 miles though in 4.5 years
35 Lexus RX400h - hybrid was cool then (2006)
38 Another Lexus RX400h - end of model absolute bargain VAT 15% (2009)
38 Toyota Hilux Invincible in Red (in addition to Lex) - thought I might need to go to the North Pole - harsh winters meant I was nearly right! (Sold 3 years later for £3000 less than I paid - amazing)
41 Audi A7 on order

That list makes me look a bit like a petrol head, which I guess is true, I wouldn't be buying the A7 without the Bi-Turbo diesel engine!

This will be 1st Audi ever when I take delivery in the summer, 18 cars previous and none wore the 4 rings! The new C7 really stood out to me and it replaces a 4yr old Range Rover Sport which I am unhappy about running out of warranty. The Audi is a massive step up in build quality with a very premium feel, I hope it does not disappoint.

I will be 33 when I collect BTW

Regarding the RRS, the post 09 models are better but still not up to Audi standards, I had a late 08 model and a host of niggling issues fixed under warranty. Still a great car, the TDV8 is a peach....but the Audi will be much cheaper to run overall and I like to change every now and again.

I agree with you there, the facelifted sport is a bit better but not quite up to it.

I have the same problem, I like to change cars often for something fresh. I had my last Audi 18 months and this one is heading for about 4. First time I have two cars of the same brand in a row. However I think I have already eyed up my next car, the BMW 6 Gran Coupé.

I'm just about to move my previous gen 6 series on when my A6 arrives. My wife and I looked at the new 6 series Coupe and it's a stunning car indeed. If it wasn't for the need of more load space and seats then I'd have snapped one up on the incredible lease deal BMW were offering. The Gran Coupe version is growing on me too.

I got a chance to see the new gran coupe and I love it, and it's got a relatively large boot. Feels so much better than the 7 series inside. Although twice the price of my a6. That's the only down side, but defo eyed it up as my next purchase.

Just pick one up in a year or two. The 6 series has always been a horrific one for depreciation. Someone paid nearly £70k for my car. I bought it for well under half that at 2.5 years old!

Got my first Audi (TT Quattro) when I was 37 and an A6 Allroad the same year, having defected from Saab (remember them). After an unhappy flirtation with Volvo I was back with an A6 3.0TDI Quattro at the age of 43 and now at the grand old age of 48 am getting a BiTDI. Apart from the TT this is the first one I am paying for myself!

37 in my second A6 - a 3ltr multi avant. My first A6 was a new 09 plate facelift 2.7ltr lemans avant which i bought three years ago. I must say the step up to that car from my previous saabs was huge and although the new one is ace, its not quite the same step change which is guess is understandable. Have to say the new car is fantastic though, off to watch the last week of the tour de france in three weeks in it and can't wait!

Does that take account of me being 29 when I got my A4 B5, 29 three years later when I got my first A6 (C5), 29 three years later when I got my second A6 (C6), 29 four years later when I got my third A6 (C6) and 29 when I got my current A6 (C7) in April? ;)

As I'm now 41, that's - guess what - 29, which must be right!

Well if the average age is just on 40, then to compensate for me there must be a 12-year old driving around in an A6 somewhere.

It might be irrelevant to you, but why not just pass on by silently if you don't care. I am not interested in a lot of threads on here, but I don't pop up and inform them of my apathy.

No it's not the most riveting thread, but I am mildly surprised that the average age isn't higher. It's certainly much lower than the xf forum I was on where a similar thread was run, although that isn't a surprise I guess.

First car at 17 was a fiat 126, 18 changed to a VW Scirocco, also had a Daimler double six, Nissan Patrol and a Rover P5B at the same time. At 21 got an Audi 80 sport (Daimler, Nissan and Rover gone) and also had part ownership of a Land Rover SWB Series 2a for slow fun. Had the 80 Sport for 9 years then gave it to a friend.
In 2000 got a Saab 900 Turbo Coupe, had that for 3 years then got a VW Golf GTDi (3 door) Wife fell pregnant so got a Saab 9-5 3.0Tdi Estate. Had that for 3 years and then got a Toyota Avensis Estate (1 week later I realised I had made a terrible mistake... The worst, most unreliable car I have ever owned.) I hated the Avensis but there was no way my wife was going to let me change it so it was kept for 3 years...

With 2 children I decided to get rid of the estate and get an Audi A5 Coupe 3.0Tdi Quattro, the wife has a VW Golf so figured it would work. It doesn't!!! Had a go in a friends R8 and discovered that it also has Isofix in the front, wife would not consider it....

Anyway after 3 1/2 years with the A5 and constant hassle everytime I tried to put Isofix car seats in the back it was traded in 2 weeks ago for an...

Audi A6 3.0Tdi Quattro Saloon. It is slightly older than the Coupe was but we have an old house we are doing up so there wasn't money for another new car.

Do I miss my A5 Coupe, yes I do... Do I miss having the back of the drivers seat kicked and foot prints all over it, plus having to dislocate my back putting car seats in? No. The A6 works as a family car and for that reason was the right choice. Would I have rather had a BMW 335d x-Drive. Maybe, but we will never know... Unless i get one in 3 years..

So rounding up the cars it 3-2-2 in Audi v Saab v VW. The Saabs were different and great for that, the VWs were good, but the Audis are better.

Anyway my age is 44 (hope my maths is right..)

I too am surprised that the average age isn't higher. Maybe I'm not an old fart quite yet after all :p

In my case, I started with the A6 at the age of 24 but had much older man cars at a much younger age :- )

2001: Civic (17) Shocker of a car. Blatantly clocked looking back, had to scrape ice from the inside rather than outside. Battery lasted 5 mins if engine was not running despite it being replaced.
2002: Corsa (18)
2004: Astra (20) Written off by foreign driver who forgot what side of the road to drive on. After that, I wanted a Volvo (drilled into my head as the safest cars)
2006: Volvo S40 (Lasted 6 Months before I got an auto as a loan car) - Model had just come out (22)
2006: Volvo S40 (This was the loan car I ended up buying...) (22)
2006: Volvo S60 (Always wanted an S60 so I ended up chopping again) (22)
2007: Volvo S80 Model had just come out (23)
2008: Audi A6 C6 - Complete lemon of a car. Only had 500 miles but spent 9 months in dealership (24)
2008: Audi Q7 - This was a loaner I ended up buying briefly (24)
2009: Audi A6 C6 (Until I figured out the Q7 was too £££ so I bought another A6) (25)
2015: Audi A6 C7 - Another lemon and got returned in Dec (3 months after buying) (31)
2016: Audi A6 C7 - My current one (32)

Very interesting thread. My turn. :D

As I am Swedish and grew up there, one can legally practice driving a car from the age of 16 (17.5 when I took my licence) with a parent or someone over the age of 24 but you can not legally pass until you have turned 18 hence the reason I was 17.5 when I got my first car!

Anyway, here's my list....

1990 (92) Ford Sierra 2.0 CLX (Cologne made, manual, injection, 120bhp, blue/grey)
1990 (92) Mitsu Galant 2.0 (got a company car on day one of my first job!)
1996 (96) Ford Escort 1.8 estate 2nd co car)
1989 (96) Volvo 760 Turbo (dark blue, sedan, auto. My first UK car!)
1995 (99) Volvo 850 GLT (auto)
2000 (01) Volvo S80 2.4 (auto, only 6k on the clock when I got it, nice but boring)
2003 (03) Volvo V70 2.5T (auto, estate, fantastic car, lots of oomph!)
2006 (06) MB C320 Cdi (auto, estate, later tuned to 276bhp, my first diesel)
2003 (08) MB E55 AMG (seriously fast (476bhp!) but spent 5 months of the 6 months I had it, in the garage!)
2009 (09) Volvo XC60 D5 AWD (back to Volvo, really nice but engine way to boring for me!)
2007 (11) Bmw 330D (my first German car after moving to Germany, tuned by previous owner, seriously quick. A rocket! Did intergalactic mileage in this - every 2 weeks to UK, the other two weeks to Poland)
2011 (12) Bmw 535D (so happy with the 330 I decided to buy this. A total lemon. Bmw made me taste their non-existant customer svs, total lemon, had nothing but problems!)
2014 (14) Audi A6 BiTdi (fantastic so far. Love it. Absolutely no problems! This and the V70 are the best cars I've had! Now sold!)
2017 (17) Audi S6 (on order, March delivery)

On top of this I own two more cars.....
1987 (08) Volvo 780 Bertone Coupe (turns 30 soon!)
2015 (15) Ford Mustang GT (a bit modified, too fast for its own good but gets the looks!)

quite a long list....never realized that!
