Golf mk4 1.6 s very bad fuel economy

Hi all,

First post and pretty desperate too !.

I have just purchased a 98' mk golf 1.6s and think the fuel economy is a joke, I can get only 55 miles from £10 unleaded, this is not on surely there is a problem (my 1.8t Leon did better at 23mpg).

Hopefully someone can either reply and say "yes, the 1.6 s is absolutely crap on fuel, live with it" or "yeh its a common problem with the ?!?!?!? ..

Hi Barry , My 99 V 1.6 S Auto Is Crap At Moment Too Only Returning Around 25 Mpg ,seems Have Got Worse Since Last Service , Am Going To Try A Few Things This Week When Off Starting With Tracking And Changing Oil And Filter So Will Let U Know How I Go On .apart From That Love The Car To Bits .

Couple of things...

Either

Faulty water temp sensor

or a

Dodgy Lamda probe.
