Ok, just got a Jetta 2008 TDI with a RCD300 head unit, there is a IPOD docking station under the arm rest.

My problem is i can't get the IPOD to work. Now the RCD300 has a CD player, and I need this to operate the IPOD, so how do i get the Head unit to operate the IPOD?

Thanks Chris, But that didn't work.

I think there is power to the socket, as when i connect the IPOD the IPOD screen comes on

Which iPod are you using? I think there are compatibility issues with the newer models.

Im not sure but some models need one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/iPod-iPhone-Charge-Adapter-Convert-er-12V-5V-CTIPOD-/280712011250?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item415bbd5df2

Im doing a quick search to see if that is supported, back in 2 mins

Thanks.

I thought only the CD player or the IPOD could be used, so surely i must disable the CD player before using the IPOD?

The iPod dock fools the headunit into thinking there is a cd multichanger fitted. Pressing the CD button twice switches the headunit from the cd to the iPod.

Does the iPod charge when inserted into the dock?

After some reading I (think) the Classic isn't supported.

I think the IPOD charges, the screen lights up when connected anyway. The ipod I have is a classic 120GB, but as this was made in 2009, the manual was written in 2007, so naturally it isn't stated that it is supported. I guess the only way to know if the IPOD connection is working is to connect a supported IPOD and see what happens.

Yep try that. I read online that Apple changed the layout of the pins on their devices and the older incar adapters haven't caught up with the changes.

That adapter I posted may do the job.

The Link you gave is for Connect2, is this the type used by VW?

Thats just the adapter manufacturer. Thats just the first one I saw when I searched for it.

You would need to check if the iPod is actually charging. If it is, everything is working OK iPod end with the dock.

All sorted now. I decided to take the head unit out and the IPOD dock out from under the arm rest. I traced the cable from IPOD to the head unit, it was connected to the large block connector, but then not back into the head unit. The car has the bluetooth mobile thingy, and i guess whoever fitted this took out the cable for the IPOD, and didn't leave it for future use. So i just pull out the IPOD cable from the large block connector and plug it direct into the head unit. I had to get some more slack on the cable, but it work and there is still room for the bluetooth thingy.

Next mission is to see if I can get better speakers, sounds a bit flat not much bass (even with the bass turned up). So any advice would be helpfull.

Thanks for the help with the IPOD, though Chris.

Did you know your car had bluetooth in the first place lol?

So both the bluetooth and iPod now works?

Yeah, i know it had bluetooth. And both work. I don't know why the cable was removed, as ther was no need too, the head unit has space for two connector - which one is being used for the IPOD and the other is for the Bluetooth.
