2.0 tdi 140 tickover question

Having just noticed when I started the car up tonight after leaving a friends I noticed that it was making a knocking/clanking type noise , it wasn't a major noise but was a defiant knocking from the front of the engine , are these engines normally noisy on idle ? Car drives fine, how would you diagnose the oil pump failure fault these can have ?

Hi, i had something similar on my 2.0 tdi 140, sounded like an irregular tinny sound... turned out to be the air con compressor pulley... £355 at Audi, but u could prob get cheaper at an independant
