Hi

Has anyone installed a dipstick on their B8 A4 rather than rely on the MMI system to tell you the oil level?

I see what looks like a shaft for one in the engine bay, with a sort of plug in it... Am I right to assume I can buy a dipstick from Audi, remove the plug and then insert and use as normal?

Yes, that's all. IIRC you can get them a bit cheaper than the dealers though.

Much as I like Audi, they do seem to be good at re-inventing a less good version of the wheel sometimes, the dipstick issue being one of these.

I swear to God i spennt like 5 minutes trying to find the dipstick location on my new Audi, only to realise that there isn't one. All you have is a tube where a dipstick may appear to belong.

I have read in other forums that in order to check the oil level you need to warm the engine up up by driving something like 30-40 kms otherwise the sensor will not register a reading at all. So let me get this stright, I actually have to go on a fairly long trip just to check my oil level? What?! This is ridiculous!

Please, if anyone knows where I can get a dipstick for my 2008 B8 A4 2.0TFSI, please please PLEEEEASE let me know. As much as I love to drive my car, this is some next level thing.

When I last checked the MMI reading, it was just above 'min' (~10%). I think I may need to add some oil at some point methinks.

But come on Audi, you make amazing cars but ruin it with the smallest of things.

I have a 62 plate 163 TDI Technik and tried to find a dipstick about a year ago, contacting both the dealer and Audi.

I have in front of me a letter from the Customer Service office in Sheffield (dated 12 April 2013) saying: "...the oil is measured via the MMI unit........ As such, this takes the place of a conventional dipstick and therefore, there is no part available for order".

The owner is not provided with a dip stick but you can buy the one shown if you wish.

Hi Crasher,

Do you mind me asking where did you get the "table" for scale adjustment from.

The MMI on my A4 2.0tdi displays oil level at max ("oil level is ok") but when i dip it with top adjuster set to 46mm im only registering an oil level of 18mm on end of dip stick??

That is from the workshop system but there is now a newer version with date revisions.

SOLUTION!!!!

Just to let everyone know, I have an Audi A4 B8 2009 2.0TDI Engine, i have done my research just like everyone else about this annoying dipstick issue. My dipstick tube is located underneath engine cover with a plug.

I found a solution at long last!!!!

I purchased this dipstick which was perfectly correct for my vehicle on eBay- CLICK HERE (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A4-A5-B8-OIL-LEVEL-Correct-DIPSTICK-OE-Longitudinal-Transverse-03L115611E/331293417125)

Now I can always check my oil level on both MMI and manually finally.

I looked at the Laser Tools, but thought it wasn't good enough. Now my dipstick fits even under the engine cover just for when I need to use it lol

And the seller comes from the same area as you. Really handy, you can pop round and pick it up. What a stroke of luck.

I bought a Laser 4807 dipstick today for my 2010 A4 B8 2.0 tdi quattro. It came with no instructions.

The latest instructions on Laser website (http://www.lasertools.co.uk/product/4807) are different to those posted by Crasher.
28962

I have set it to 62mm as per instructions and it barely registers at the '0' level with oil.

Anybody used one of these lately with a 2.0 tdi engine? Should I be using 46mm as the start mark?

I bought mine from Sealey Audi Engine Dipstick 600mm VS600ED | eBay (http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Sealey-Audi-Engine-Dipstick-600mm-VS600ED-/290611763527)

Set top aduster ring to 46mm and fill oil up to level 25mm on lower scale - (make sure stick is fully inserted ie the bevel face of adjustment ring is sitting right in the dipstick hole) my MMI always reads "oil level OK" for me at this level.
As sanity before you remove oil - set adjuster to 46mm and Dip check to see where your current oil level is at on lower scale

Thanks.
It looks identical to the Laser version.
I guess the most important aspect is the length of the dipstick and the distance from the bottom of it to your 46mm marker point isn't it?

Just for information in case anybody else is looking for a dipstick for their 2.0 tdi:

It turns out the instructions at the time I downloaded them (and posted my previous message) were wrong

After having trouble using the Lasertools 4807 dipstick, I contacted them and got this reply:

"Thank you for your enquiry.
The Laser 4807 dipstick is compatible with your Audi 2.0 TDI CR engine.
The measurement to set the adjuster ring on the dipstick is 46mm.
The maximum oil level on the bottom scale is 24mm.
The minimum oil level on the bottom scale is 0mm
Sorry for any inconvenience."

I have now adjusted the setting and am getting a perfectly good reading.
This also means that if you connect your car to VagCom/VCDS to get your oil level readings and they read about 78.500mm they are within the healthy range...

Thought the diesel engine was different?

Is your dipstick underneath the engine cover?

I know you drive a tfsi kronny, I was replying to your post. I'm talking about my own car.

My previous posts have been with regard to finding a dipstick for the 2.0tdi quattro engine.

I ended up buying the Laser one because I was told by both my local Audi garage and TPS that there was no such part for my vehicle.

The Laser one is ok, but would prefer an OEM version if anybody could confirm the correct part number.

Can anybody else confirm the 06E115611H dipstick works with the 2.0 tdi engine?

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I've just bought a 2013 A4 2.0 Tdi Q and come across this issue.

I'm a bit confused as to which dipstick I need, as it seems some of the early ones aren't compatible with the later engines, or not with the dipstick tubes under the engine cover?

Mines a CGLC engine and the tube does appear to be under the cover. Anyone know which OEM dipstick I'd need, or if it's one of the Laser ones which length I would set the dipstick to?

Thanks in advance, James

Okay , is this needed or can trust the MMI ?
Wierd is that MOT has recorded as NO Dipstick to check oil level :)

No idea how accurate or reliable the MMI display is (although in the above link it does suggest that it's the oil warning light which would ultimately warn the driver of low oil level). Personally, I prefer a manual check anyway, especially when topping up - a dipstick can never fail or go out of spec, any electronic sensor can, and eventually will.

From experience over the last few years I would say the sump sensor is extremely accurate and always correlates with the dip stick. The reason for the dipstick is speed as the MMI takes a while to respond.

6 years with B8, few times checked manually oil level at service , same reading as MMI, for present reading use DIS oil reading.

Good to know. I'm still glad I ordered the dipstick as I'm not sodding around getting in and out of the car and turning it on and off to fill the oil up. Like you say, speed is sometimes an issue. Life's short.

Hi just wanted to check I am purchasing a 2011 2.0TDI Q5. ( i know this is the a4 engine but I understand they share engines)
I prefer old fashioned dipsticks.
2 questions
1) with the T40178 tool (https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dautomotive&field-keywords=tool) the settings of 46 0 24 on the Laser website says it is for the 2009 TDI engine (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audi-2-0-Engine-Dipstick-Brand/dp/B018WS0MTA). Will this work for my 2011 2.0TDI?
2) What is the amount of oil between the min and max mark ? is it 1 litre?
3) Is the dipstick tube easily accessible? is the bung under the engine cover.

Thanks for help in advance.

Hi to All,
yes the Audi dipstick removal did cause some angst. My new A4b8 2010 arrived less the dipstick. Audi response was that home wrenchers may check the oil on an unlevel surface, introduce the wrong oil, misread the dipstick and introduce dirt and contamination, so WE made it easier for car owners. After repeated attempts to purchase a dip stick (although Audi indicated that nothing existed ) I managed to purchase one from Korea, exactly the same as diagram indicated in an earlier post.
I reported this on this Forum but got no takers or interest. I trust current Audi's have reintroduced a dipstick.
Regards
John
