Looking at getting a iPhone 4s in the near future and am thinking about how to connect it to my Symphony stereo to listen to music. I have the 3.5mm socket under the arm rest, but would prefer to control the music from the steering wheel or stereo itself (not the iphone). Already have an aftermarket Kufatec Bluetooth connectivity thing.

Have read that I can buy a cable (don’t know which one or from where) and disconnect the CD changer and use the same socket. Would prefer not to do this, but if it does what I’m after, then it’s an option I’ll probably take. Would like to be able to see track info.

MMI is the not sat nav version and controls are under the stereo, no by the gear stick.

Has anyone any experience of doing this, or know what I need?

Have a look there. You can get AMI which will allow control through the stereo but will cost quite a bit.

The device you mention fools the system to think that it is a CD changer. It will work, i am guessing at this but cannot see how it will get the plays-lists on the iPhone.

To get the full functionality using the MMI the Audi AMI is the only way.
I was fortunate that my car had a MMI fitted, but I found it too cumbersome to keep plugging and un-plugging the iPhone, for this I got myself a cheap old iPod from eBay and leave it plugged in to the AMI all the time, and occasionally connect it to the PC to update the music.
Hope this helps.
