I have a 2007 A4 TDI. Recently when putting the foot down in any gear the car has revved rapidly up to 3/4000 RPM before returning to normal. This could be at any speed from 30 to 70 mph in any gear but mostly the higher gears. From a very unmechanical person is this the start of the clutch going? If so whats the likely replacement cost? All help appreciated.

Sounds very much like the clutch but it's normal to happen more in the higher gears.
Not sure why - something to do with torque I think but like I said, I'm not sure why.
May spread to lower gears as it gets worse but that's a guess.

I bought a car with a knacked clutch a few years ago and it was worse in the higher gears.

Thanks guys. Any ideas if this can be fixed without a new clutch, would a fly wheel be needed as well as a new clutch?

Price for new clutch at an independent is around 600£.Clutch and DMF is around 1000£ again at an idependent.Never do the clutch without the DMF.Replaced the clutch on mine last year(610£)and now the DMF is on it's way out.Don't make the same mistake.good luck.
