I have owned my 1996 a4 avant for 2 and a half years now. It is fitted with the remote locking which i assume to be the IR type as it only beeps on unlock and has a terrible reception range. It has always had a small issue with working sometimes but as long as use the key then it seemed to work fine again for a while. I replaced the battereies to no avail.

Last night however when i got home pressed the button the pump continued to run on despite the doors being locked. After a few attempts at going up and down it finally locked with the pump no longer running.

I come to get in the car this morning and nothing happened with the key fob so tried the key and it worked on the drivers door but failed to open any of the others. The pump does not run at all so i am guessing it has smashed the impeller. The alarm still makes the noise and lights flash and the interior light still comes on so i know thw key fob is working.

What can i do to fix it? I know i can ge the kits of ebay but would like to get this sorted asap because i am worried that it may not lock or i will forget that it is not working properly. Can i get another pump from the scrappy and just swap the parts over that are damaged? I have got a vag cable and software so reprogramming is not a problem but need to know i have got the right one to start with.

All help appreciated

Mike

Had the same problem with a B4 80 TDI Avant. Given the age of the car I suspect you'll probably want to source a second-hand unit. New pumps can be as much as £300+ (not including fitting) from Audi.

It's important to determine the exact pump (primarily the Audi part number) as there are multiple variants available. The pump is located in the boot (O/S) behind the trim.

Detailed articles here depending what fix you go for:

You could try Ebay or www.breakeryard.com to source part. http://serve.mysmiley.net/happy/happy0034.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net/free-happy-smileys.php)
