This question is here because the TDI 110 engine was common to several VW Group cars.

Mine is in an A4 B5 saloon with 4-speed auto box, and even in standard form it can be startlingly quick, especially after a dose of Diesel Magic in the fuel and Lucas Transmission Fix in the gearbox (usual disclaimers, but excellent products).

Can't afford a remap or a new tuning box, but that doesn't stop the lust for more power, torque and economy :D.

Can anyone report positive results with any of the many tuning boxes on the market, some of which turn up on a well-known auction site ?

Yes, I've seen that and should have mentioned it. Thanks for highlighting it.

I had a passat tdi with an AFN 110 engine around 4 years ago, i bought a Hoppa plug in module which made a noticable difference to the power/torque, these did cost a lot of money in their day, from memory over £400. It's in my garage gathering dust, yours for £40 if you're interested!

I've bought G3off's tuning box, which does what it says on the tin for my AVG engine although he'd used it on an AFN, but I'm interested in another for comparison. Needless to say, it'd need to be one that performed well for you on a TDI 110 :D
