Hi all

I have just had the gearbox oil changed (6 speed manual, 2.0 tdiS-Line), I was there whilst it was done and it took just over a ltr of new oil, maybe one and 1/3 litres (yes the correct sythenetic spec).

However according to the garages computer the box should hold 3 ltrs, but approx the same amout came out of the drain plug (on the bottom of the box) as went back in for the fill point 3/4 of the way up the box.

Any thoughts ?

Ian

If they've filled her up till it overflows from the top hole and the cars on the level there's not much more you can do.

The HTA and HCF 01X series boxes fitted to manual 6 speed cars with BLB engines in 2006 take 3 litres of Gear oil G 052 911 A SAE 75 W 90 (synthetic oil), 2.2 litres is the capacity of an 01E series box, either way filling with 1.5 litres from drained is very worrying. 2.5+ litres I could understand as 3 litres is a dry box capacity and your box is at what is known as wet capacity.

Hi.

Thanks for all replies and as usual I am confused.
I have double checked the quantitly put back into the box and it was approx 1 and a 1/3 bottles, the size of these were 1.32 ltrs (not one ltr as I thought).
That means that we put in 1 and 3/4 litres, the car was started and run in gear for a couple of minutes (with the front wheels off the ground) and the level re-checked and slightly topped up using 1 & 3/4 ltrs in total.

I realise that even with the drain plug being centre of the bottom of the box not all the oil will drain out (it was a cold day and the car was warm but not hot) and the capacitys stated are for full drained boxes.

The question is if the box should hold 2.2 ltrs, I can assume that it's probably about right but not if its 3 ltrs.

Am I over complicating matters, the car was on a 4 post ramp = level, and the oil dribbled out of the fill plug ! (and was double checked after running in gear) The mechanic could only find two plugs, the one in the middle on the bottom and the fill one which was 3/4 of the way up the box, roughly in line with the drain plug and on the passenger side of the box.

Any comments ! even if it's shut up you wimp and just drive the bloody thing !

The car is a 2005, 2.0 Tdi S-Line A4 Avant (140 bhp) 6 speed

Cheers Ian

Can you look at the data sticker in your service book or on the boot floor and tell us the transmission code? It should be HTA or HCF.

3lts it is then for the HCF box ,if the filler plug wasn't removed when the oil was drained might explain why he didn't get all the oil out

The drain plug in the middle of the bottom of the box was completely removed and time given to drain down. Is there another lower drain point that he missed ?

If the filler plug was left in while draining it will pull a vac and wont drain down completely,I think thats what kenney's alluding to.

If it was left to drain and then only took just under 2 litres to reach the level, I would be a little confused.

I see what you are getting at, however both plugs were removed. As roughly the same amount of oil was put back in the level could be right but only 1/2 the oil is new.

Just out of interest at how many miles did you change the gearbox oil at ?

Hi

The car has been back into the garage, they drained the 'warm' oil leaving both plugs out for almost an hour = 2 ltrs (ish) of oil - How odd !

re- filled to the fill level, car ran in gear for 2 mins level re-checked topped up = 2 ltrs (ish)

As for when the oil should be changed, I was recommended at 120K
