Hi - I have only joined the forum today and I have had a lookat the other lack of power posts but they don't cover my problem.
I have an A4 1.9TDI 110 BHP 187k on the clock and has been running like a dream - until recently.
With hard acceleration it suddenly loses power but does not show any smoke and does not misfire, but if I switch off and re-start it's fine again.
The symptoms only showed occasionally but now it is happening every couple of miles so something is getting worse - any ideas?

Is your car a fly by wire ( no throttle cable ) if so then get the number three injector checked as this has a wire going to it and controls the other injectors, if not it could be something as simple as a blocked air filter . : also this could be a split in the injector spill pipes (these are the small pipes that link all the injectors together ) run the car and see if you have Diesel leaking out of them it doesn't have to be much to have an effect

Could be the MAF playing up? That is usually cleared by turning the car off, then it will go into limp mode again when it gets triggered again. This happens more and more as the MAF is on the way out. Know anyone with VAG com locally who can scan the ECU for fault codes?

Hi Roger- we had this on our 292K 1995 passat- took it to a specialist. Only £120.
He said he replaced "a sticking solenoid".

Hope this helps

Blake.

Take Devonutopia's good advice.

Your 'limp mode' is most probably going to be a worn or failing MAF.

I agree.... MAF

I changed the MAF ( not an Ebay one) before giving up and having the specialist look at it. The fault would only show when hammering the car, say a mile with your foot to the floor. It started only on the motorway, but over a week the distance needed to trigger the fault slowly dropped until 100 yards was enough. The power went down like a switch operating. It didn't like any revs either, even with no load. It all looked so MAF-like at the time. If you pressed the clutch, and turned the ignition off-on while freewheeling, power back in. Ignition on-off with your foot still down- no change. the engine had to go to no rpm, and no ignition, to reset it. ( Using the word 'ignition' with a Diesel seems all wrong, but I can't think of another word! )
