hi people

I have been doing a couple of long journeys in my 1996 5cyl 2.5 tdi quattro and am quite happy with the running of it, but have noticed that the water temperature never appears to go above about 70' C on the temp gauge no mater how long or hard i've driven it. is this normal?

Cheers

should sit @ 90 like your other machines - new thermostat (& G12) required

had this too in my car ('98 2.8) and it didn't come right til i get a new stat with cambelt and now it warms up to 90 and stays there.

Thanks people

That'll be a job for payday then.

Speaking of temperatures what should my oil gauge read?
( it doesn't read anything at the moment)

Cheers

It's a straight forward job on the 5cyl engine. All you need is a thermostat, seal, and 3 bottles of G12 - perhaps a bottle of speedflush if the old coolant is murky or non VAG coolant.

The oil temp will usually be a little behind the coolant temp unless you are driving hard or in a high ambient temp environment. About 85degC is normal.

aah that'll be a new oil temp guage or sender required then....

the list of repairs gets bigger. :(

I have some Mercedes OE antifreeze in the garage would that be ok to use?

Forgot to add your oil temp guage will not read untill you fix the thermostat.

I would not use anything other than the VAG G12. Use of non VAG coolant leads to system corrosion and premature thermostat failure.

Thats good to know about the oil gauge, should save me a job then.

Right i'll get some G12 from GSF, just thought the the Mercedes coolant might be from the same barrel as the VAG coolant, or at least the same quality.

Cheers for your help. :beerchug:
