Help on buying diagnostic equipment

Sorry if this has been posted before. I am looking to buy some diagnostic equipment which will read fault codes and reprogram. I want to pay as little as possible but don't want equipment that will bugger up my cars. We have a 2000 beetle 2.0 petrol and a 2001 1.9 TDi Bora Sport. Can anyone advise or point me in the right direction with an idea of costs involved? Many thanks in anticipation. Ian.

x2 on vagmans reply. Only buy genuine, support the creators for their product and not some chinese copy.
