Hi, my B5 passat, 54 plate has 205/60/R15 tyres on alloys and I have been offered a set of 4 steel wheels with 195/65/R15 fitted with winter tyres which came off a B5 passat. I think these will be fine but can anyone confirm this? Are there insurance implications?I went onto a national tyre website and put in my reg - it came out with 195/65/R15 - that leads me to think they will be fine.:

They should be fine, 195/65/15 is the standard tyre size for steel wheels.

They're spot on. That's what my winter grips are. Speed is the same according to Tom Tom.

DO NOT use alloy wheel nuts on steel wheels the taper angle is different, only use the correct wheel nut for the wheel !!!!!!!

Thanks Andy - would never have known that. By the way, any idea where you can get the steel wheel nuts?

For nuts then yes. It's not always the case with bolts though. My skoda uses the same bolts regardless of wheel type.

Thanks for the suggestions - I will go to my local VW dealer and see what they say. Appreciate the advise from all. Thanks again

I find standard VW alloys seem to use the same spherical/radiused seating that the steel wheels use. Bolt length may still be an issue? Some aftermarket alloys use seats with a 45 degree taper which is not really compatible.

Thanks Scotty33. I will get VW to check it over - they may even change the sets over for me if I am lucky! Now that I have gone for winter tyres I bet we get the mildest winter on record!
