Headlight Washing Systems

My headlight washers seem to work on their own. This morning when I had my rear wiper on, the headlight washers came on, at other times they come on with the windscreen washers.

It all seems a bit random and I wonder how my very clever Audi decides when I need to have my headlights cleaned.

Can anyone help??

Think I read somewhere that they operate on every 5th squirt of the windscreen washer- but the technology could have moved on from then :)
