Noisy gear box or clutch arrangement

:1zhelp: Audi A4 Avant - 1.9 TDI - 5 speed manual - 2005: When changing down through the gears in particular into second and first - there is a severe whine until the clutch has been fully disengaged. This fault started when the car had only 8,000 kilometers travelled. Any ideas as to how serious this is and what may be causing the problem.
