Last night, outside temperature was around 13 - 14 degrees, I drove the car about 7 miles, approx 10 - 15 minutes, and then sat at a train station, for about 20 minutes waiting to pick up my other half, we then drove back again, another 10 - 15 minutes.

Stopped the car on the drive and got out, it was obviously quite late around 11pm, so there was very little background noise. But I could hear these little tin, ting tin ting tin ting tin ting noises coming from within the exhaust system,

Car is running ok, so I'm thinking it is just noise made by the exhaust metal and components changing temperature, expanding and contracting, but it went on for about 10 minutes until the exhaust start to cool,

any other 2.0 tdi 170 owners heard anything similar, car has done 70k on the clock?

It sounds like your car has a DPF and was regenerating; the DPF and other parts can hit 800 degrees centigrade during this process so there will be a lot of expansion and contraction.
