View Full Version : Xenon Lights - replacing P21 DRL bulbs

I've tried a couple of sets of canbus friendly P21 (382) LED bulbs to replace the standard halogen in the DRLs for Passat CCs fitted with Xenon headlights. However, both sets result in the bulb warning light appearing on the dash.

The same LEDs work fine in my Scirocco so not sure if the CC is more sensitive and needs higher resistance built into the LED? Car MY2011 (late 2010 build date).

Has anyone with Xenons successfully replaced the DRL bulbs with LED ones in the CC, and if so do you have links to them?

Cheers
Paul

Have you ckecked out this thread:

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?114863-Day-Running-Lights/page6

I want to do the same so would be interested to find out which bulbs to go for. The thing that confuses me (and I've not played with LED bulbs before) is that you've made reference to P21 (382) LED whereas the existing bulb is a BA15.

On Xenon units, the DRLs are definitely P21W bulbs - looking at ETKA confirms this (VW part number N0177328).

Yep I agree, the bulb is 21W. The confusion I had related to the bulb type you mentioned (382). It appears that the bulb type 382 is in fact a BA15s bayonet (15mm dia and s for single filament). For example, from a Lucus catalog:

15001

So, getting back to the main question of this thread - is it possible to fit LEDs without the bulb warning light coming on? From the link I provided, it looked like ednaroad got the LEDs to work. It would be interesting to hear if others have managed it.

ayeaye - Which ones have you tried?

I've also come across this Seat thread:

http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=329154

Looks like similar issues with bulb warnings (but a useful tip related to ensuring you take key out and doing a "full re-boot"!). Also some issues with polarity.

In order to change DRL lights 21watt with DRL led lights you need resistors for not have issues with bulb warning.
If you want i will put some photos with the project.

Hi, Old thread I know but after searching t'web for hours I'm not really getting anywhere... Did/Has anyone managed this ? Cars arrived now and the yellow DRLs are the ONLY thing I don't like about the car!
Cheers, Matt

This is a problem for me too, Audi S4, I can get a Cree P21W canbus working on the near side but not the same bulb on the offside. 2 bulbs cause continuous beeping and errors. I have tried 3 suppliers, ebay, amazon and a wesellleds but cannot find the weblink. Once I accidentally bought non canbus LEDs one worked the other didn't, checking the suppliers I saw a message, some cars will not like our bulbs you then need our resistors at £10 each. I am still trying to find working bulbs. I am reluctant to buy resistor packs as they complicate the wiring in the holder as well as the extra expense.

I have tried http://www.horizonleds.co.uk/cree-leds/bayonet-cree-led-bulbs/1157-BAY15D-P215W-cree/1157-5w-cree-led-bulbs

My A6 has the same DRL set up. I've tried 2 sets of supposedly canbus friendly bulbs to no avail. I get the errors too. One set was the Crees - very high quality - but as well as the errors the bulbs was too directional rather than the 360 glow you need for this installation.

I went back to candles.

How about a bit of coordination, photos and links.

I'll start with odd info from other posts on this subject.

1. 1157 - BAY15D/P215W : 1157/BAY15D/P215W - CREE LED 5W (http://www.horizonleds.co.uk/cree-leds/bayonet-cree-led-bulbs/1157-BAY15D-P215W-cree/1157-5w-cree-led-bulbs)
one bulb worked, in nearside fittment. Photo to come.
2. Apparently the following from Fizzmo UK on ebay work (see other led post) one user reports they will refund if not happy. I have not tried them but wish I'd heard of them sooner and will give them a go soon. Ebay.co.uk item - 120870938039.

Edit at your pleasure and repost.

Hi, I'm a bit farther along. After taking a DRL bulb out I've found out exactly whats needed... a PW24W (Pics attached) apparently a not very common bulb, I've got a price from EMTuning at £30 for two + p&p. I'm just trying to clarify that they are canbus friendly and if any errors show up I'll get a refund. Can anyone find them for less ??

What car is yours? A different bulb entirely from the P21W bulbs in the older A6.

I have some supposedly white non-LED P21W bulbs on the way. I shall report back when fitted.

Your bulb pw24w are a different fitment to ours. My DRL p21w uses the same type bulb that fit in the reversing light and for some reason that looks white rather than yellowish. Maybe just my imagination but I will check tomorrow in case of wattage differences.

As far as I know there isn't any LED bulbs still that are working without errors on Passat CC. I've used with that error already, LEDs are so much nicer than the original yellow crap.

Hi D4D,

Right - I've fitted some new P21W candles in my DRLs and here are the result:

Before:

25770

During for comparison

25771

And after

25772

Overall impressions not too bad at all although they don't seem as bright as the standard items due to the blue coating. But they do avoid the "Max Power Blue" effect which is nice.

I've also popped some wee LED sidelights in to match the xenons but they seem to "pulse" just like every other external LED bulb I've ever tried to fit to this car.

Anyone looking for “Super Bright LED” Can-Bus compatible bulbs that work with VW CC and do not give a “lamp fault” indication, try the bulbs sold by “AJW Automotive” on Amazon.co.uk. I got the “CREE Super Bright Can-Bus W5W / T-10 Sidelight Bulbs”, and these work perfectly in my VW CC. I also got the “WHITE Cree 30w Can-Bus Super-bright 1156 Reverse Bulb” to replace the original P21W DRLs in my VW CC - I have tested these bulbs on a 12V battery and they are extremely bright, but still waiting to enable the DRL function to test them in situ, as detailed in separate thread post titled “Enable P21W Daytime Running Lights ( DRLs ) on a VW Passat CC 2008”
