Hi all, I noticed a few oil stains on the drive recently, not bad enough to be concerned about - yet.
Looking around the engine the only oil I could see was as shown in the attached photo'.

It is on the left side of the engine below the coolant expansion tank. Not sure if it is a faulty breather or oil leaking from the ducting above it. Can anyone point me in the right direction before I start stripping things off. The engine is an AVF 1.9tdi

Thanks

Give it all a good clean and keep an eye on it for a few days. You'll soon see where the oil is coming from.

That's the oil cooler. I suspect the oil is coming from the Boost pipe seal above the cooler. Regards Peter

Took intercooler pipe off and found a damaged seal, probably not located properly by a previous owner/mechanic before inserting. Not a great deal of oil in pipe but enough to cause a drip. £11 for 2 seals from VW. Hopefully sorted.

Cheers guys

Just make sure when you put the hose's back on that they're really tight and snug fit. I've put mine on before and had them blow off under pressure and I thought I had them snug with the clip fully down but obviously not.

Also the 2 shoulders you can see on the coupling do wear due to it being a soft metal and vibration

Hope the new seals do it for you thou

While you in the swing of things i would go round the rest of the intercooler pipe work and take a good look for similar issues

Do you have the part number for the seal please? Also can anyone confirm if this is the same seal that goes on the pipe at the back of the engine which fits into the EGR valve housing - I suspect that I have a slight boost leak from this but the dealer couldn't find a part number listed for the seal and said that you need to buy the complete metal pipe (the 90 degree one).

Part number is 3C0-145-117-F. Not sure if it fits the EGR pipe but it looks about the same size.

Thanks very much - I'll give that a try.

I had same fault on my old passat (afn engine) and where the breather pipe connects to the block it had cracked and gone brittle causing a gentle sweat of oil and over time started to leave a little patch of oil wherever parked. New breather pipe from VW was bout £24.
