Initial thoughts are head gasket. head was overhauled including skim 40k ago, it was a payen set cardboardy with steel flame rings. Could this be u/s already?
As the engine oil has no evidence of contammination, could the oil be creeping in through a flaw in the oil filter cooling base, are these prone to failure or am I being wildly optimistic as it would be a lot easier to sort out?
The engine is otherwise running, pulling and idling just as well as it always did.

The car is a 1995 GL estate with a 2E engine

Probabley the oil cooler. Disconnect the two water pipes and joint them together with a piece of copper pipe. Run the engine and await oil to seep out of the cooler. Regards Peter
