My Q7 is going to my local Audi centre for an MOT in a coupe of weeks (it will be 5 years old).

The garage has asked if I want the air con serviced, 'as recommended by Audi'. I've agreed to it.

The car is mint, has only done 43,000 miles and has a FSH/ Extended Warranty.

Is the air con service - at £89 - necessary and reasonable?

Thanks...

In my cynical opinion, probably neither necessary nor reasonable. If aircon is working fine, then ask them what the service comprises. I suspect a pressure check and a change of filter at best. If aircon not working go to an aircon specialist and have a professional evacuation and recharge for less than £89

Keep us posted, Andy

PS May be time to find a local Audi specialist

Just my 0.2c worth.....In all my years I've never had an aircon service in any car I've owned, and maybe been fortunate, but never ever had any issues with it either?

Maybe the trick is, my A/C is always on, I never switch it off!
Sometimes people complain off bad smells like rotten eggs / cabagges etc and this seems to be down to lack of use of the A/C where a moisture build up allows bacteria to form, hence the smell.

From time to time I do get the Comma A/C cleaner from Halfords or the like ( usually around £11.00 ) and run that through the system......its dead easy and takes around 5 mins and leaves the car smelling lemon fresh.

As I said, I'm not saying its a bad idea, I'm not saying don't waste your money, just sharing my experiences

Yep....would agree with the last post. Keep it running all the time! The difference it makes to fuel consumption is, on modern cars, virtually negligible and it keeps the system from seizing as well as not allowing bacterial growth.

Thanks to you all for the constructive replies. As I read them with my wife it becomes obvious that to pay £89 would be a waste of money (that's the tight jock from Falkirk in me coming out). Our air con is always on too and the car smells fresh as the day it was new.

I've got a full extended warranty on the car and it has only ever been worked on by Audi franchise so I won't be using an indie specialist... not yet anyway.

That said, I am thinking about changing the car, not because I'm fed up with it but so the cost to change is less (i.e because it is mint now, needs absolutely nothing doing, looks the absolute part, every time something pops up I get it done 'properly' (as my previous threads might suggest, I've spent a bloody fortune to keep on top of this car), it is low mileage, is nicely spec'd, has the 'proper warranty' and is the 'current shape'. Therefore, hopefully I will recoup it's market value in a private sale... whatever that might be).

I really like the car though, it's on a private plate so nobody knows its age and it ticks all the boxes, including the 7 seats that service us and the 3 kids very well.

If I sold it, what to buy to replace it. Cannot believe the price of the obvious 2 cars that I would replace it with... Discovery 4 seems OTT price to get good spec (I had a Discovery 3 and it was brilliant/a pleasure to own/ Landrover warranty and customer service are the best I've experienced)... and to get the latest version Q7 with LED/DRL lights seems a bit steep too/ maybe even pointless given my own car, spec and mileage???

Decisions decisions!
