Just wondering if anybody else has had a similar problem.
When my car is cold there is an audible gearbox whine when accelerating in first and second gear. As soon as the car starts to get warm it goes.
But it's there everytime I start from cold.

mine is making a funny noise. I had wheel bearing two weeks ago but this is more of a gearbox background noise now. Also have had problems selecting 1st and reverse gears but seems to be working at the moment

I've had wheel bearings replaced too, also clutch. I sometimes have a problem getting it into first gear, and I've also got a droning noise which is more noticeable on smooth road surfaces.

if i turn the aircon off it just doesnt sound right and is really notchy changing gears. I have always complained about gear selection but they tell me mine is normal. Going to take a new one for a test drive me thinks

Yeh they told me that too, that notchy gears were "normal". But when I had a loan car of the exact same model its gearbox was much smoother with first and second gear falling into place effortlessly. I admit that having the clutch changed helped a lot with 3rd 4th 5th and reverse gear, but 1st and 2nd is still poor.
I've also got a droning noise on cornering that they can't diagnose, it's now becoming noticeable with the wheels straight and under normal driving, I wonder if this could be linked to the gearbox prblem ?

Sure it isn't the 'other half'? ;)
Sorry couldn't resist...

if only :)
Do you get a sort of clunk as you move the gear stick to the next gear - almost embarrasing in a 30K+ car. The sort of thing you would expect in an old ford escort
