View Full Version : Econ mode will not turn off

I have recently bought an Audi A4 TDI SE 1.9 first registered in December 2002 and cannot get the climate control out of Econ mode. Pressing Econ, Auto or any other combination of buttons does not remove the red light from the Econ button?

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks very much.

Believe can be a number of things worst case compressor, or clutch on compressor, best case no gas.

Know this only from my research on other forums as I have the same problem - Have you cured yours now?

No, still the same problem!

I have booked the car in to an Audi garage in a couple of weeks for a diagnostic test.

This issue is now resolved.

Needed a replacement pressure sensor, £100 fitted by an Audi dealer.

My aircon was getting warmer so at 5 years old I got it regased. That worked for a day then it just blew warm and climate panel flashed on switch on. The evaporator unit (inside the car) had ruptured and lost the gas. Got a replacement from German and Sweedish for £120, VAGCOM for £160, and a weekends work got it fitted. Regassed and has worked ace eversince.

High this is the same kind of problem I have had I have been advised to get the gas checked then get the fault codes read if the gas level is ok. The difference with mine is that sometimes the econ button comes on its own then will not turn off and other times system works fine. On my travels investigating this I found a company who can reconidition air con controls for around £100+ p.p. or test for @ £30+p.p. they are called B.B.A. reman based ingillingham kent has anyone used them? When mine is fixed I will post what was needed good luck all!!

As stated in my other post this turned out to be the high pressure switch. My car is now fixed and Climate is working perfect.

I also have 'stuck on ECON' problems with two Audi A4 1.9TDI Sports, on a 2001 and 2002 plates.

The local air-con specialist has diagnosed these both as compressor and condenser failures. He seems to know his stuff, but the cost of repair is circa £1000 each and your post has me thinking.

Does anyone have any further knowledge of this subject, as i amloathe to put the car into Audi and spent £90 on the same diagnosis.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I would get them diagnosed on Vag com or similar first? The high pressure switch is a common problem on these you only have to buy one to test on both cars? I would check with the ******* it is the same part first!!

Not sure where you are in the country just need to find a garage who specialise in VW/AUDI could try yellow pages? If you anywhere near headcorn in Kent I can,t say about their prices but they know what their doing and their called MS autos good luck!!

Hi Do you know what the part number is....I have a Audi A4 1.8T Sport 2002 with exactly the same problem and would like to solve it too.

jenky - you're in luck.... check this before you purchase but for reference High Pressure Sensor for condenser radiator is part number 8E0 959 126 (ALSO known as Thrust Sensor?)

Is there a way to check it without paying £70 to audi (extortion) to plug in their diagnostice tool?

yes - mine threw up a + ground and a - ground fault from Thrust Sensor with local mechanic, which puzzled him a bit!

Hi Madfella

I cannot thank you more mate. Went to Audi's this morning bit the bullet and bought the thrust sensor which was exactly the same part no as you said (cost me £40). Unscrewed 4 x T30 torx bolts on the offside headlight and eased it out a little to get access. I then unscrewed another little torx screw T15 which was holding a plastic plate and was just obstructing my spanner.
Took the old sensor off (heard a tiny hiss as the valve came open then sealed again. Put the new one on started the engine and BINGO!!.....a/c is PERFECT!! The whole job took me just under 10 mins (and that was taking my time!)
I've had this problem on and off for a year, even took it to an a/c bloke who didn't have a clue with his equipment.

You've saved me so much time and money mate I am extremely greatful.

I hope my full fitting description helps other people who have this very annoying problem.

Cheers JENKY

I also want to echo my thanks. I was diagnosed with terminal condensor and compressor failure on 2 different A4's - mine and the wife's. I also bit the bullet and took it into the main ******* - £55 diagnosis and surprise, suprise - its the pressure switch. They want £147 to supply and fit this, but it appears as though even i can do this one myself!!

suprise, suprise. bought the sensor, took out the passenger headlight, popped in the new switch, turned the key....i now have air-con again!

My next trip is to the guy who wanted me to spend £1000 on new compressors, condensors and labour. I hope he has a good explanation.

Power to the little man.

Hi there,

I have an AUDI A4 (B5)I'm trying to sort out what I think may be a similar problem here.

My A/C all seems to work, but the air does not get cold. Only ambient. It does get hot and the fan is all fine etc. (In fact I just fitted a new one)

I had the compressor recharged about 10 months ago, so I know it shouldn't be low...

I have checked the Climate Control OBD codes and it is showing a fault -
(F118) A/C Refrigerant High Pressure Switch, static open
* Compressor remains off until switch closes.

Does anyone know if this relates to the same problem?

Any help, really appreciated.

JooJooBeans - first off hi & welcome to the forum, i am not familiar with the Heating Control Panel in the B5 but i can say that the error i got pointed back to the High Pressure Switch, i changed it and hey-presto! The only way to know for Def is change it and see if it fixes your prob!

Well I have my system regassed as it was flat but "Econ" lamp is still on so it looks as though it is the pressure switch locking out the system.

Where is the switch can anyone advise, I regularly have the front off the car to change belts pumps tensioners coupligs etc so should be easy?

It happens to me as well and it turned out to be the high pressure switch or thrust sensor in Audi terminology.

Anyway, there is no need to take the headlight or front bumper off since you can easily view it at the left side of the radiator fan (if you are facing the engine) just below the driver's side headlight ( UK C5 models only i.e. 1998 to 2004 ).

Just bend the rubber cover secured by one screw only and you can view and access it, though it is a bit tricky to unscrew it.

However, for those who want to fully access it, just remove the front driver side headlight. I can confirm you that the headlight is secured with three bolts only - two on the top (T30) and one on the lower side by the fender. Note, there is a hole in the frame and you need to look deep down to see it as this one secures the bottom of the headlight casing.

Or get it done by a local garage since they have the right tools. Only a £10 - £15 jobs which takes few minutes.

I hope this helps.

Hello from another new user.. Well its not clear that I have a high pressure switch issue based on reading this and the other forum... can someone point out on an A4 3.0 where the switch resides? I think its behind the left headlamp ( the driver's side over here)
thanks
