Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed a low-level rumble (?nearside front) at speeds over 40mph. I've only 22k on the clock, front tyres are new (the noise was there before the change) and I'm struggling to locate it. Years ago I would have called this a wheel bearing going, but modern cars are a mystery to me! Any ideas what it could be?

Why not just jack the wheel up and give it a spin? At low rotation speeds you might not hear much but you can always use the old mechanic's trick of pressing a wooden dowel on the inside of the hub and sticking the end in your ear, which will transmit any low-frequency rumbling very efficiently into your ear, like a stethoscope.

Thanks Ben - wouldn't have thought of the dowel trick! Is the wheel bearing a good possibility? I guess I ought to look for loose trim too - there's no effect I can feel through the steering and I don't want to pay a Dealer a wad for "investigation"!

Edit - it was the bearing. Now for an argument over warranty..... Cheers Ben
