hey im new to the scene, just bought a w reg a4 1.8 20 valve, it is having problems with idle, cuts out when you take foot off throttle, i believe it to be the idle control valve but i am struggling to locate it or even find what i need to buy to replace it,

any help would be much appreciated

Ello & welcome!

First port of call would be to get the fault codes read with VAGCOM otherwise you could end up changing allsorts for no valid reason. Audi will charge circa £100, an independant circa £40. Once read, there should be a clear indication as to whats giving you problems. No point advising what to look for & where until you've had that done as there is a myriad of causes that can give rise to what you're seeing. Duff coil packs & sensors can trigger rough idling meaning that the fault doesnt lie with the Throttle Body. Out of interest, does the check engine light come on or flash?

But for piece of mind, the throttle body sits behind the inlet manifold to the right of the engine bay.

sorry should of said it has been taken to audi and they said it is throttle valve? according to fault code, i dont hav paper work cos it is previous owner that took it, however i aint sure whether that means the throttle body its self or if there is a seperate idle control valve, i found the throttle body but cannot find anything that resembles a iscv, thank you for your help im not used to working on german cars, not quite as simple as my ford lol

Before you start changing any parts, I'd be tempted to drop the throttle body off and give it a damned good clean with throttle cleaner such as the Normfest one from Euro Car Parts.

Also what are your spark plugs like? If they're pretty sh*tted up, try a new set aswell.

Lastly if you do gp down the route of a new or second hand TB, AFAIK you'll have to hook up to VagCom to have the TB adaptation done.

"Lastly if you do gp down the route of a new or second hand TB, AFAIK you'll have to hook up to VagCom to have the TB adaptation done." AFAIK???? also whats vagcom and why would i need something adapting? can i not just buy a replacement part?. sorry if i sound stupid but im a bit clueless at the moment

VAGCOM (VCDS) is a software suite that is used by VAG techs, independant garages and many private individuals to access the car electronics. With the software suite you are able to monitor, code and fault diagnose the various electronic systems of the car. Look up http://www.ross-tech.com/ for further information

AFAIK - As Far As I Know

In regards to the adaptation, this is a name that is given when a part is "coded" to the car and optimised in terms of operating parameters.

ah i see, so without adaptation will it not work at all? or just not as effectively as it should? how much roughly do you think it will cost for adaptation? thank you for making sense of all this for me, also if i hav to buy a new TB how do i kno which one to buy? are any of these interchangeable? for example could i get one from an A6 or a passat? if so is it possible to get a slightly larger bore TB and fit that? only reason i ask is Because on my broject car i used a lot of mondeo and escort parts e.g 2.0 TB and MAF and a escort inlet manifold.

thanks again
