However when i was in Greece last year i got into a old Merc Taxi which had 880k Kilometers on the clock..

I was tooking to the driver and he said it had had 4 gearbox re-connds, about 6 wheel bearings, and just a few general bits and bats like cam belt etc..

He said the car has been on shift for the last 9 years 24/7 3 drivers a day... and has only been off the road for a maxium of 3 weeks over them years when in the garage!!

Now thats some seroius miles!

All Mercs have a timing chain....not a timing belt....there are cars in europe with over 1 million km on the clock.

RickT
07-04-2007, 12:59 AM
Sorry.... i meant chains... i know they are running chains ans more thank likley in most cases its just a tensior thats needs replacing..

in regards to 1 million miles or KM on the clock.. i know some one thats has a sprinter with 700k miles... (its a work van and is now 10 years old..

My recently acquired A4 avant tdi only has about 167k miles on the clock so I'm expecting it to last a while yet.

Previous vehicles though have included a Punto van with 205k (160k by me in 2 years) and Astra van with 353k, both used for work.

Not a VW but my 1986 Land Rover 90 2.5 Diesel has about 225,000 miles on it, not exactly sure because it's ex-MOD and they throw spares at their vehicles for fun so it's on its second speedo. We got the figure off the MOD computer record, which a pal in the RAF managed to get for us.

The engine doesn't burn any oil and it pulls like a schoolboy.

That's interesting, i was trying to find out what the highest mileage car was a while back, I had a look at the latest Guiness Book of Records but they've dumbed it down and it wasn't in there. I had a copy of the book from about 2000 and the highest mileage car was listed as a Volvo in New York state.

I'll be surprised if Mr Sachinidis gets anywhere near that level of milage out of his newer Mercedes....

Super cars arn't they? I bet it's just running in nicely at that mileage, I had a Sharan with the 1.9TDI engine unfortunately I crashed and wrote it off at 80K but it was superb never used a drop of oil and never gave me any trouble at all, one MAF sensor and oil and filter changes.
These cars really are cheap motoring in my opinion.

Hi, I'm new here.
I'm learning to drive at the moment (at the tender age of 32!) and I intend to buy a Golf as my first car.
My sister has had a string of VW's since she learned to drive and drives a Polo at the moment, and most of my family have VW's.

The reason?
Well when we were young, our dad had a Golf C (mark II). He bought it from his sister who only had it for about a year, and he used it to commute from Birmingham to Rugby and back every day. I can't remember how long he had it, but it was a good few years, and one day I remember him remarking that it had gone round the clock!

How many miles does the mark II have on it's clock before it starts again from 0?

The truly remarkable thing is that he never had to have it serviced! He was very fastidious about servicing it himself, ie oil changes and brake shoes etc, but he never had to have anything major done to it in the whole time he had it.
He had the car for a good few years after he clocked it, and only got rid of it when he retired about 7 or 8 years ago.
It had started to be less easy to start, and the paintwork had begun to bubble ever so slightly in places, but it was still in astonishingly good condition considering it's age and mileage.
The car wasn't scrapped, but sold on to somebody. Who knows, maybe it's still out there?

When he got rid of the Golf, he bought a Focus. He still says that he wishes he got another VW instead. He likes the Focus well enough, but he thinks the build quality isn't as high as on a VW.

Anybody had their car rolling road tested to see if there's been any loss in performance?

Obviously mileage suggests wear and tear but if you got a car with a 100+ and relatively new a knocking guess is these are going to be motorway miles. Am I right in thinking that continuous running is better for engines than stop starts?

Not as far as I'm aware, on my 20V petrol, was still returning nearly 40mpg at over 200k miles, however you can't underestimate the important of regular oil and filter changes.

Couldn't agree more, always over serviced my cars they reward you well, I've never had a car in the last 12 years that used any oil I put it down to clean oil keeps things running tighter so stops oil consumption.

Yes, I had mine rolling road tested at 179,000 before its recent remap - it's a 1.9PD TDI and it was bang on at 132bhp. Remap took it to 191bhp. That was in Feb 08 and have done 6,000 miles since with no identifiable issues.

Shall have it rolling road tested at 200,000 (approx 4-5 months time) with crossed fingers.

It has never let me down and still manages 400 miles plus on a tank. Sailed through the last few mots and current one expires next January.

Just been a given a lovely low mileage Golf Mk2 - anybody want my Jetta? (I also have a '91 Jetta with a mere 135,500 on the clock).

my 1994 80 1.9tdi bought with 155000 miles on now has 185000 runs well but only has dealer service history up to 90000 tho, i`m hoping it`ll hold out till 250000 then i think i`ll be ready for a newer one.

my last car a 1988 citroen ax had 244000 miles on it when i scrapped it and that was only cos chassis was badly corroded, was a nice cheap car though, i`m finding some parts a bit expensive for the audi but i suppose its in a different league to a citroen.

never mind dont think the audi will need welding i`m amazed how good the underside of the car is compared to much newer cars, the manufactorers of which i wont mention, but we all know who they are.

Just gone over 183k miles with my 2001 A6 1.9 TDi, think it's a 110 bhp. Still feels and looks in top condition. I was apprehensive about going over 200k which I expect toward the end of this year, but not now ;)

My last A6 was a 2.6 V6, I passed that on to my partner, didn't think it worth selling for the silly £500 or so, and that had done just over 185k, when the ECU went, cost was quoted around £300, so let it go last year. Only thing I replaced was the clutch slave and master cylinder. I reckon if I'd carried on with it, would be well over the 200k.

The 100 I had before had well over 120k on when I changed it, that was an auto and another dream to drive. Been with Audis for over 20 years and can't find anything in their league.

Hi "Isoproturon". I am tempting fate but no major problems, still on original exhaust, battery clutch etc. Just changes of brake pads, disks and tyres! Car still drives like new, cruises at 120mph in Germany without problem and in Norway at much reduced speeds returned 62mpg over a 3500 round trip. Makes you wonder how far it will go, I wonder if anyone out there has covered more miles?

The Corrado has 201,000 but has eaten two engines in the last 10K hehe!

hi lads i recently worked on one of our company cars an A6 2.5tdi 54 plate that had done 209000 miles, the air con tensioner pulley bearing broke up and snapped the air con belt which in turn took out the other auxillary belt behind it so i replaced all the pulleys and belts as a precaution. Not bad mileage for a car thats not even 4 years old must be a record!

Just coming up to 130,000, I've had this car for just over two years now, got it after it's 100,000 mile major service it had 102,000 on it then and in the time since I've had some problems, now I need a new radiator, my mates say I'm mad for putting up with it,:D yeah well, maybe they're right, I've spent a small fortune on it so far, more than a grand + , the thing is though and I know this sounds potty, this is the nicest looking money pit I have ever had, when it's right it's a pleasure to drive and the money it's cost to keep it going, well it's only money, fingers crossed after the new rad is fitted I'll have no more problems

My 53-plate A4 Avant 1.9TDi has now got 165K on the clock. Thought I would treat it to a full detail on Saturday, pictures can be found at: http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=79725

Bought in Sept. 07 with 140K, I have put 25K on the clock; only thing to go wrong was a seized wiper linkage (£63).

1050cc mk2 polo, 265,000 miles and still didn't touch a drop of oil. Pity my mate stuck a hole in the radiator and wondered what that funny smell was as he cooked it to death.:zx11:

Red Mk2 GTD 200,000 miles, utterly knackered when I bought it 100,000 miles ago, still just as bad. Drinks oil nearly as fast as diesel. Still, lubricant is cheaper than diesel now, so not too bothered.
Blue Mk2 GTD 150,000 miles, like a diesel swiss watch, doesn't touch a drop. Love it.

I just part ex'd my MkIV golf gti (2.0l) which had 217,000 miles on a V plate. One clutch and a water pump, no real issues apart from the lambda probes and air mass meter. Still does 120mph and has relatively good acceleration. I got £600 for it as my kids wrecked the interior. One snapped off the dash cup holders, the youngest bit a hole in the seat and the middle one put paid to the rear cup holders. Apart from that, my wife parked it in a hedge.

She won't be getting behind the wheel of the S3.

If you are reading this dear, I'm only kidding.:D

Hi
Thinking of buying 2002 Audi A4 Sport 1.9TDI from my company with 177,000 miles. Seems to run OK but no turbo ? Seems to rev ok and no black smoke. Any ideas what it will cost to sort. I an thinking of offering £1500. There is a dent in the rear tailgate.

You could do with diagnosing the car first with VAG-COM or similar, because there are many faults that could leave you without turbo.

Where are you based?

Hi Paul

I work in North London, Cricklewood and live in Hampton Middlesex.
I need to get the car serviced as it appears well overdue but do not know of a local Audi dealer or mechanic. I dont want to put the car in to a dealer
charging £100 plus per hour labour !
Any ideas ?
