My 1997 A4 1.9 TDi is currently sitting at just 131,000 and going great - just about run in i think ;)

My 1989 80 Sport has only covered 115,000 miles in the last 19 years, way below average mileage :D

Hi all, new to the forum and spotted this thread.

Mk3 Golf Driver 136000 ish miles so far and used for road/navigation rallies and still going strong.

1993 Audi 100 2.3E Avant, 212thousand or so, still on original box and engine, had it's first ever clutch change on 206 thousand. Only other parts changed, fuel pump, exhaust and O/S/F window regulator. Needs new N/S/F wing otherwise in very good nick so far. Love the thing to bits. It even did one 12-car navigational event in 2006 as a stop gap while the Golf had no MOT although it was a bit unwieldy down country lanes.

I have a 2002 Audi A4 with 150,000 on the clock, just needed EGR valve replaced and new cup holder as well as a few bulbs. Great Car and ultra reliable as well as very economical with 55mpg+ although i think i have MAF sensor issues as mpg around 41mpg at the min. these cars should last well over 250k as long as properly serviced every 10k(religiously) and a proper fuel additive every 3k.

We where amazed when we took the box out and all the bolts still had the paint marks from the factory on them.

Touch wood other than usual stuff like brakes and tyres it's been faultless.

Forgot it has had a front screen but that was caused by a stone.

2000 A4 1.9tdi (PD) which will have done 200k by the end of next week. Still on the original clutch and I have no evidence that the exhaust has ever been changed (i bought it with 122k on the clock). Still returns well over 50mpg on my daily 100 round trip to work which equates to nearly 700 miles on a full tank of diesel. Still feels as tight inside as when I bought it and I dare say when it rolled off the production line. Front suspension bushes have been creaking for the past 30k miles so that's the next significant job that I need to tackle. If only they made Audis like this today...

Hi all
My 2001 Passat Tdi 130 estate has done 207k miles. Rebuilt the gearbox and new clutch at 190k (£1300!) , but still going like a bomb. Hope to get to the moon at least (237k). Over the years, have once had the usual pollen filter leak and flooded footwell (which made the alarm electronics go nuts), and once the usual leak of washer fluid into the tailgate, necessitating repairs to the lock. Otherwise just tyres and brakes. It has developed an interesting suspension rattle now though, very odd, only there when I ease off bombing along at 80. Not over bumps, not when turning, will post about it in another thread.

Hi guys......think I'm winning at the moment!

A6 1.9tdi auto (98 - AFN engine). Got 390K on the clock so far, with nothing needing to be done to the engine or box apart form regular servicing....

Just about to have all the belts done and a few bits and bobs.....so she's good for a fair few miles yet....

Had 2 lots of dampers (@160K & 360K), had an expensive convenience control box replaced (got the water in the footwells = private swimming pool problem from the aircon).......and it's worst habit is it has eaten 3 aircon compressors....

Doesnt mind a bit of cooking oil either....

Anyone been further?

Hi, am new to the forum. I own a 1991 J-reg but now on Spanish plates as imported it over to Spain, Golf GTi Mk2 8v and about to do 206 000 miles - not kms. Had it since 78 000 miles in 1999. Still going strong but now injectors sticking open and causing cold start problems and my old specialist Mark Tempest in WGC says cannot get Mk2 injectors in UK anymore. My Spanish garage has been looking for 1 month and counting. Amazingly just passed Spanish MOT after 1000km round trip to Med 3 weeks ago. Still need the injectors but garage will only fit brand new. Can anyone help ?

I have a 2001 (Y) Passat TDi 130 Estate (Auto :o). Got it in 2004 with 119000 miles on it. Now just hit 216000 miles. Going pretty well.

I invested in a VAG-COM when I first got the car as it was high mileage and out of warranty - best purchase I ever made, worth it's weight!!! Has saved me LOADS more than it cost.

Only issues:
Cat collapsed at 185000 miles - apparently the exhaust was entirely original until then :D.
Changed the MAF when I got it as it seemed underpowered - First time out on the new MAF was the first time the traction light came on ;)
Charge Pressure Sensor

All in all i'm pretty impressed with my dub.

Hi All, 94 Audi 80 TDi Avant with 250k miles, I've had it since 78k miles (97).
Original engine, g/box, clutch , exhaust & rear suspension. About 20 sets of front tyres and I just had the alternator rebuilt. Apart from that it goes like a train. These have to be the best cars ever built.

Hi,

Have acquired allroad 2.7t with 155k on clock. Having issues with:

Air suspension - Warning light on dash when attempting manual control

Drivers window - Goes down but sticks on way up

Rear Parking Sensors - Working intermittently

Knocking f/r suspension and squeeky steering - think this may be ball joint

Emmissions/Cat warning light on dash

CD changer not working

Burning smell after warm running but no loss of any fluids

The car is cosmetically beautiful in and out with top spec and runs great so would love to keep on the road but audi want me to remortgage the house to fix it so looking for cheaper alternatives.

Have you experienced any of these issues? If so how did you remedy them?

Cheers.

P.S. Did 1500m to Nurburg and back in it a couple of weeks ago without a hitch. Other than the 6 tanks of unleaded!!! Remapping to 310bhp does have its downsides (19mpg combined for example).

I just part ex'd my MkIV golf gti (2.0l) which had 217,000 miles on a V plate. One clutch and a water pump, no real issues apart from the lambda probes and air mass meter. Still does 120mph and has relatively good acceleration. I got £600 for it as my kids wrecked the interior. One snapped off the dash cup holders, the youngest bit a hole in the seat and the middle one put paid to the rear cup holders. Apart from that, my wife parked it in a hedge.

She won't be getting behind the wheel of the S3.

I use it every day for tree surgery - lugging logs and chippings and towing a 700kg chipper.

In 6 years it's never let me down, just needs oil/filter change every 6 months and the odd cambelt replacement as per schedule. We even clean it out and use it for hols (it has a fiamma awning and fridge and cooker in middle section. Got us over the col du tourmalet!

A cube of concrete 2-4 times a day or a couple of pallets of 6ft tall wooden fence material every second day since bought. fuel pump exploded at around 86,000 miles resulting in a half tank of diesel being lost over 2 miles.oops! new shocks needed soon and probably the leaf ones too. I am delighted with her. Long live VW.

An update:

My 2003 A6 1.9TDI PD has now just gone over 207,000 miles. In the last 40,000 miles of ownership (18 months), I can report that there have not been any issues or additional cost outside of normal servicing.

I think 2009 could be an expensive year though. There is a front suspension wear issue, not major, but needs sorting now. The front pads and discs need replacing also. I will be very surprised if I make it to the year end without needing a clutch and flywheel. I believe the car is on original clutch from factory build - not bad considering she's been running with a remap since 184,000 miles - Touching wood that the cam doesn't go boom - but with 507.00 spec oil changes every 7k miles, hopefully might be ok.

I might it give a treat also this year, in the form of a new MAF and an EGR clean.

Other than, pleased with the car and no intentions to get rid in the foreseeable.

Saw article on a Passat about 15 years ago.
Can't remember all details but was impressed by the following;
Was 1985 B reg, 1.6 engine, if memory serves me right it was petrol.
Owner covered 450,000 miles with just normal servicing and replacing things
like water pumps/alternators! He said he drove it easy till oil temp warm.
Car was still running good when article was written.
Maybe someone heard/seen this one?

I'd be happy to brag about my Passat at 220,000 miles (356,000 km) but it has been on 3 different engines, started life (first 100,000m) as as 2 litre 16 valve GT, I swapped for a modified 1.8 16 valve on Motec, with which it has done several laps of the Nurburgring Nordschleif, and it is now running on a 1.9 TDI, which is the best conversion I have done so far, 40,000miles on Biodiesel, no problems...
Just looking for a 130PD to put in it now, hence the post about PD injectors.
Seems these older Passats (1989) are getting a bit rare in scrapyards, so I may have to buy a spares car from ebay to keep the old girl on the road. Any offers?

I would say so, but you may need to upgrade the clutch as the extra power could be the last straw for an older clutch.

Try the sponsors page on here, there's plenty of remappers who could do the job for you.

And one combining all makes/models/marques;

VWAF Official High Mileage Club - Combined (http://www.editgrid.com/user/mycarsavw/VWAF_HMC_-_Combined)

To join, please post on this thread with your details

The more I read of these high mileage cars, the more convinced I am that piling on the miles does cars no harm at all. Certainly my high mileage Bora has proved more relaible than my low mileage Golf.

Obvioulsy stuff wears out eventually, but, mile for mile, I bet the costs on repairs are much less.

I've just hit 100,000 in my 02 A4. I'll be disappointed if I get anything less than 150,000 from it and hope to get 200,000 out of it. That'll be about 5 years worth of milage at my current rate.

I know you guys are in the 100,000's but do you or have you had any big problems with the engine?

Only reason I ask is because my old Passat B5.5 had 27,000 when I bought it for £7k back then... I am looking for a B6 now and have about £8/9k MAX to spend and becuase its a current shape can only really find ones with over 60,000 miles on it. I drive about 20,000 a year and dont want to get one with 60,000 if its just going to go wrong.

Thanks!

The only problem I have had was the cam wore out with the cam followers also wearing until there were holes in the tops of two of them! I was lucky in that I could do the job myself.
I say this but I believe the cam wear problem is more commonly found in the 1.9 TDI 150 bhp model.
I'm sure if this is incorrect someone will put it right for you but this has been my only problem!!

Which engine are you looking at 2.0TDI? The first thing i can think of is Cambelt. 60K is the time for it to be done and it costs between £250 and £400 to do. so check it has been done before you buy ;)

Theres are guy in my office with 56 plates cars with 80K+ and no issues ;)

Sometimes wonder about a "Low Mileage Club."

Reason I say this - only joking honest - is I remember a 1988 Polo saloon I bought for my youngest daughter in 1999 just before she started UNi. She failed her test twice before starting her course and lost interest in driving until she left in 2002. I ran the car myself for a couple of years reducing the mileage on my main car.

At 11 years old it had 32,000 completely documented miles on the clock. Every receipt, every MOT was presented with the car. The previous owner had bought it off his mother when it was 6 years old. At that time it had only 7,000 on the clock.

My wife's Tigra had 39k on the clock when she bought it, 97 plate, this was back in 2002.
It cuirrently has 57k on it, which isn't bad for a 12 year old car. I use it once a week and can probably account for at least 10k of those miles.

Ah... I had a Hillman Imp in 1999 with 17K on the clock, Had all the receipts etc and in 1990 it had 6K on the clock!!!. The year the car was first registered was 1976.

My 2001 130tdi manual Passat estate now has 225,000 miles on the clock. It was pretty fine up to 190k apart from the necessary 'ingress of water through the pollen filter' and the absolutely mandatory leaking rear washer pipe making the boot release fail. VW contributed to both bills as they are such common faults. At 190k I needed a rebuild of the gearbox (1300 quid incl new clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel), and since then have had broken offside front spring (£210), new nearside drive shaft (£200), new cat on exhaust (£210) and new drivers window motor and belts (can't remember how much?). So boys and girls, the lesson is get rid at 189,999 miles! On the other hand it could go on for years, still goes like the clappers and does 50mpg.

Just had new clutch & dual mass fitted £857.00 :aargh4: (local guy who is excellant) and I've done the discs and pads plus engine service (parts £218 from Europarts) - all this is the only money spent in the last two years. Having to press it back into towing as my 07 plate company smoker has gone back. By comparison it was cr*p - all the usual niggles an the head gasket went at 68k.
Got to say that even at over 200k the 02 machine feels more responsive and is more enjoyable to drive.

I'm just arriving at 400K in my audi a6 1.9tdi auto. Still no work whatsoever to engine or gearbox (touch wood). 1st nearly breakdown with a plastic fitment in the cooling system fracturing, but apart from that she runs brilliantly......

I'm told that PD and especially common rail are more unreliable as there are more bits to go wrong and wreck the motor.......the bits from the various pumps get round the fuel system requiring a total rework of injectros, fuels lines etc.....so simple is best and the 110 is one very tough motor....

Hi all - first time here,

I have just scrapped a 1996 a4 1.9tdi (owned from new) with 375+k miles!!! - suddenly it was worth £2000 with government scrappage scheme (so I gave that to the parents and bought a second hand a4 quattro)

OK - so it had some bent panels, some black smoke (injectors were last changed at 150k), central locking had broken and one of the rear windows didnt open too well - but it still drove OK and returned an average of 45mpg until the end!

I believe the secret is being consistent with the oil change (done myself), every 10k, using good oil (millers synthetic XFD), and genuine audi filters.

I used a fuel additive all the time (millers diesel sport 4 or whatever it is called), after about 100k.

I will use another good quality oil, genuine filters and fuel additive on the new car too, and hopefully enjoy the same longevity.

Hi There

I own a 1997 Audi A4 1.9tdi - It has 265,500 miles on the clock and is driving superbly. It's been well maintained and is unbelievably reliable. I've replaced the entire front suspension so the ride quality is excellent. Still does around 47 -53 mpg - more on a long journey.

Anyone considering a high mileage audi - just service them when they ask for it and repair them if they have a fault and they will serve you well.

I have no intention of replacing mine and expect it to pass 300,000 miles comfortably. This car has the original engine, gearbox & clutch. :biglaugh:

Still has original clutch. in my opinion, the good thing with Audi's is that the interiors wear very well. Still feels a nice place to sit.

My mates 2000 Peugeot 406 110 Hdi has just passed 210k miles, feels fine to drive and still averages over 50mpg. No wonder they are popular taxis!

The A6 is on 83k miles now, not high in total but it goes for it's first MoT in two weeks time, so not bad going so far.

The more I read of these high mileage cars, the more convinced I am that piling on the miles does cars no harm at all.

The way I figure it, if it's done all those thousands of miles, there're can't be too much wrong with it.

1999 A3 Tdi 110bhp SE which has done 204k.

Tested me out last year when the timing belt snapped at 180k on the way to get the ruddy thing changed. Still cleaned valve seats etc & still going strong.

Couldn't resist adding this as I'm about to say goodbye to it next weekend as I trade it in for a diesel A4.

VW passat 2.3l v5 petrol, 1999 (V reg in silver) - 200,050 miles and sailed its MOT, and still returning 30mpg on its 100 mile a day commute.

No doubt it will be coming to an auction site soon
