Engine ECU problem - fault code 17794

Anyone got any ideas as the cause of my Engine ECU fault, on year 2000 A4 - B5 1.8 non turbo. Code read as below, can clear DTC, but fault returns after short time of further engine ops. Engine management light not illuminated. Engine is notably down on power, and hesitant. Cheers.

The fault on a Knock Sensor will retard the Ignition Timing to stop a `Knock` situation, causing a loss in power. You need to diagnose if indeed the Knock sensors are faulty.
If you do have a faulty one, note: Do not overtighten them on fitting to the engine block. 10Nm i think.

Thanks for the reply. Shall carry out some wiring checks to hopefully narrow down the problem. Shall let you know what I find.

Have checked the wiring disconnects for the knock sensors, and they check out ok. Shall do a wiring check up to the ECU as well at the wknd. If I have to replace the ECU with one say from e-bay, will I need the SKC code for the removed and old ECU to complete the installation? Cheers, Mike
