As the thread title suggests, how can I find out without taking off the wheel and inspecting the pads?

If I havn't got brake pads with wear indicators then is it possible to fit them an make use of them (i.e so the OBC informs mewhen they may need changing)?

Its not a major concern, I just noticed that there's very little difference in price between break pads with and w/o wear indicators.

N.B My car is 2001 VW Bora Sport TDi PD

the dealer should also be able to tell by looking on their computer system, they'll need the reg and or vin number.

just the one pad then? how does it know if one of the other 3 are wearing low? or does it work on the basis that all pads wear evenly and at th same rate.

I may be wrong it may be on the nsf inner pad but some have both os and nsf wear indicators,i dont know the exact answer for calculating the fitting location of the indicator but with a floating type caliper the inner pad will wear more than the outer by a small amount as the piston pushes the inner pad.

Swapped the wheels on my Passat in the last week and the sensors are on the inside pad on both sides.

Well ive got a 2000-X plate Bora TDi SE Sport (6-speed) and that has the sensors so i am presuming you will have as well.

Only just got the brakes replaced actually last week when i had the car in for a full 80k service. The brake pad warning light was lit when driving.

Ditto.

Alec, finally getting in on the big wheel phenomenon I see? What have you gone for 23" chrome spinners?

My Octavia has it on the pass front.

When i bought my new pads they never had a sensor on them, so i cut the sensor of the old pads and joined the wires, then clipped it into place. This got rid of the Dash light.

Check incase this was done previously.

I fitted 135-80-14s to reduce the wind resistance.
They are inflated to 4 bar and I am getting 2mpg more.

Normally I'd laugh, but I'm not sure if you're kidding or not. The tyre size looks consistent with a tyre needed to keep the speedo inline but that could be a double bluff.

I'll take the 4 bar as the giveaway and smirk to myself.
