a4 1.8 petrol wont tick over

hi folks new to the forum and to audis to be honest any way i have a r reg audi 1.8 5v that wont tick over it will start up and then cut out but if i take it a quick blast and rev the crap out of it .it will then tick over but struggles too . it ran fine untill it ran out of fuel but since then it wont tick over also on pull off it sort of holds back a bit then clears any help is very greatfull

idle control valve is always a start. If not a blocked fuel filter/injector could have been caused by you running the tank dry. I'd start to taking the idle valve off and cleaning it up, then a strong dose of fuel system cleaner may clear things up for you. Also i've found a spark problem (broken plug cap or bad coil) will often show up when you dip the clutch and it conks out.
