I had a problem with my 99V passat 110 diesel a few months ago. It had no power across full rev range. I replaced the air flow sensor and all was OK. Now it has developed to have no power below 2000rpm then pulls fine it does sometimes feel like loads of turbo lag. Has anyone got any experience of this kind of problem for a tight get who does not want for fork out good money to local garage.

Phil,

You need to change your air flow meter.

I've got the same problem with my vw golf mk4.

If am driving down the motorway and the car will suddenly loose power.

To fix this problem, I have to pull over the hard shoulder and turn the engine off for 5 minutes.

I've been doing this for the last 6 months. But yesterday the air flow meter completely went. So now I don't have any power what so ever and the car is using alot of fuel.

I've asked this guy who works for vw dealers , and he said the air flow meter is a common problem.

Here's a link for the air flow meter on sale from ebay.

But I do Highlight to take the air flow meter out and get the exact part number
for you own vehicle.

I will be ordering the part sometime this week and will fit on the weekend.

It is very easy to fit, should take about 15-30 minutes.

Basically you take out the sensor lead and couple of screws.

Where did you get the MAF from? Some of the ones from ebay etc are poo they dont last very long i.e a couple of months. Its better to go to a ******* or GSF these tend to be alot better.

I'm sorry to say this guys, but I've done 11K in 10 months on my ebay MAF and all is well, the simptons that are being suggested are pointing towards an overboost issue, ie it resets if you switch on and off. It could be an N75 valve issue pr prssure convertor or vaccum pipe work around it or map sensor.

The best step forward before replacing anything would be to get the fault codes read, it will save allot of money in the long run.

Hi onzarob,

Your proberly right, some else suggested diagnostic check with machine.

Since I already ordered the part I will try this first. If this doesn't fix the problem then
I will get the codes read, instead of wasting lots of money on different parts.

Just to reiterate what Onzarob said about a vacuum pipe coming loose. This happened to me giving the same symptoms. From memory there is a plastic vacuum pipe which runs across the engine bulkhead i.e between the engine and bulkhead with a push fit joint in it. Mine had popped out and merely needed pushing back together. Hope this helps.
