A/C Condenser

Air con condenser has been long gone, I've been quoted about £300 for a replacement fitted as well and a re-gas. Given it is a 1996 TDI GL it is not worth doing. I thnik the local VW breakers, decent guys quoted me about £30 for one out of a car but I declined as I thought it may not last.
Any other opinions?

Was in a similar position with my last car. Honda quoted £500+ to repair it. I ended up leaving the windows down :p.
