Bought one the earliest Jettas in 81 and ran it for 9 years without problem or deterioration anywhere. Got top price when I sold it.

Bought one of the first "big bumper" models with Umwelt engine (90 -91 I think) kept it 8 years and it was pristine, same result when sold.

Now have an 07 with 35,000miles on, and the plastic on the window lift buttons is delaminating (hardly ever open the windows). I have only ever seen this happen on old Ford Cortinas but not VW.

Are corners being cut these days?

Although only minor, it is unsightly and will no doubt affect resale values.

Jetta 1, built in Germany. Jetta 2 (not Umwelt, that was the Vento), built in Germany. Jetta 3 (Vento), built in Germany. Jetta 4 (Bora), built in Germany. Jetta 5, built in Mexico, I rest my case…
