Sorry, I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct section of the forum but I need to get this off my chest!
A couple of weeks ago my 1997 Tdi 110bhp started to lack power and then it would not accelerate well. It felt as though the turbo was not working. The fault was beyond my limited knowledge of how these things work so I took it to an acknowledged specialist - the local Bosch centre (County Diesels in Syston, Leicestershire). I left it with them to diagnose and for £60 I was told that the wastegate on my turbo was faulty and that it would cost me approximately £1,100 to replace. I could not afford at the time and drove home thinking that my car was finally going to the farm! My dad decided to open it up and somehow managed to take the turbo out. He decided to show the turbo to a friend mechanic he knows who tested it and said that there is nothing wrong with the turbo. The mechanics advice was to fit the turbo back onto the car and take the car to his garage. So we re-fitted the turbo at the weekend and took the car to this mechanic. He fiddled with some wires and cleaned the contact of a sensor at the back of the engine and hey presto the car was back to normal!!!!!!
My issue is not to trust garages, I am really not happy with what the Bosch centre told me and I will be taking this further. ? Some people may have paid the £1,100 for a garage to simply clean the contacts on a sensor!
Please do not use County Diesels in Leicestershire - they are clowns and out to rip off innocent customers.
Rant over, sorry........... and breathe.
