Audi A4 Avant 2004 diesel (Tiptronic) - Transmission problems! fault code P0706

Hello All,
I am new to this forum, so please be gentle :)

Just bought an Audi A4 Avant Auto (Tiptronic). Been searching on the web and it looks like it could be a common problem. On the dash, I get the PRNDS panel all flashing together, so you don't actually know which gear the car is in. All gears seem to work fine though. It is an intermittent problem, with no real pattern of occurence.
Fault code comes up as " 17090 P0706 - Transmission range sensor circuit =>- F125: range performance. Value of resistance too great". I am told I need to change the TRS (Transmission Range Sensor). I really can't afford to get it done by Audi, but wondering if anyone knows if this is a big job and what the part would cost? Whereabouts is this sensor located? Any info would be much appreciated. Car has done 115,000 miles and is still under a very basic warranty. Thanks

Out of desperation, taken it to Audi garage this morning and got quoted £1400 !!Ouch it hurts :(
Apparently the Gearbox ECU is faulty.

Thinking of getting it reconditioned for half the cost by Slaters (in Nottingham). What do you think?

Only had this car about 2 weeks and seriously disillusioned by Audi. Not sure my warranty (from independent dealer) is worth much..

If you have only just bought the car from a reputable dealer they should help or I would sue them but act quickly

Thanks Mikey. I am going to speak to the dealer today and set him an ultimatum. Do you know if they are insured on these kind of things or do they take the hit from their own pocket? Reason I ask is that I would like to give him both options. I appreciate the fact that it is a 7 yr old car..

Shoudnt think that they are insured but they wont want to pay if they claim sold as seen. The law would expect the car to be functional and if it has a major fault you could at least say if they dont help out you would consider action in the Small Claims Court. This wont cost you much and may make them see that you are serious Thats what I would do.Most dealers are rogues in my experience over 50yrs

Thanks Mikey,

After a long time on the phone yesterday, thankfully the dealer has agreed to pay for the work. As I thought, they will not fork out £1400 or for a new ECU, however, they will pay for a reconditioned unit and labour costs to remove and replace the recon unit. This comes to about £500 in total. Apparently, this is quite a common problem, as a few ECU repair specialists are claiming. Look at this link: http://www.ecutesting.com/audi_a4_a6_multitronic_gearbox.html (http://www.ecutesting.com/audi_a4_a6_multitronic_gearbox.html)

Hope this helps others.

Yep common on MULTITRONIC but your original post stated TIPTRONIC,the tiptronic is the auto box used on quattro models, multitronic for 2 wheel drive( front drive) and yes they suffer with all kinds of nasties which is well documented
Good luck with this one and do a few google searches to make sure your multi is up to scratch; ie fluid change at 40,000 strict etc, be prepared

Cheers mate.

Yeah sorry, didn't know difference between Tiptronic from Multitronic, so thanks for clarifying.

So, you would recommend getting a full transmission oil change done and a also a filter change? do you happen to know if I need DSG oil or other?

Will be looking to get this done mid next week.

thanks for your help.

Good news about the dealer. No doubt they knew Multitronics could be nasty.Hope it all gets sorted and you have to look after these. I guessed it wasnt a triptonic which is what we have and they are completely different

No problem youda, glad to be a help, I'm not a tranny expert but you could do well to call Audi direct at the customer service department for accurate details on fluid type and change intervals
Good luck friend

Thanks Mikey and Stuart.

Car goes into the garage tomorrow for the ECU to be dismantled. Then next thing is for me to post it to 'ECU Testing' in Nottingham. Then a case of waiting about 4-5 days to get the unit back.
I have decided in the meantime on getting the oil and also the transmission oil filter/gaskets renewed.
Might look at other bits that need to be done (e.g front tyres) whilst the car is out of action.

Thanks for the support, will let you guys know how I get on.
