Hi All,

this is my first post.

I have just got an new "Audi A3 S-Line 2.0 TFSI S-Tronic Black Edition" and wanted to know the correct way to break-in.

I have been reading different opinions and don't know who to believe.

The first website i came across while search was this one.
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

He talks about the hard break-in. but i get the feeling this is for newly built engine and Audi would have already dont this for me at the factory.

then i went of to read this
http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/engine-break-in.htm

and this seems to feel more correct to me.

I'm a 33 year old man and to push my cars hard. I want to try and get the most of of this engine. and make it last and not drink oil.

Please can i get some advice.

What does the handbook say ?

It will usually give advice on running-in !

Never had to run a car in myself, but I'm sure it involves no hard acceleration, no hard breaking, no labouring the engine, don't stay at a high speed for long periods of time and don't rev above a certain rpm.

I'm sure there's more than that but I'm taking a wild guess.

I have put together some quick bullet points as a guide.

if anyone can tell me which of this are correct and which or wrong.

For the first 500 miles

Dont use more that 50% of power till warm
Dont use more that 70% of the eninge power
dont use hard breaking
Avoid extended idling.
dont not baby the engine
dont race the engine
avoid low rpm with high load
avoid high PRM with low load
medium rpm with medium load is best
Avoid steady rpm driving (like highway)
Use varying rpm's between 2500-3600 rpm.
accelerate up to 70% and slow down under engine braking

I personally think that it is for older engines considering that before they leave the testing bay in the factory, they are red lined for a distance to test the engine ?¿

I would keep it under 5000 RPM for the first 1000 Miles then do what you like with it. I have done this with three of the last four cars I bought and not had any problems. Don't just stay in one gear, accelerate between 1-5,000 in various gears and lift off then accelerate on the motorway up and down between 50-80. It uses more fuel but will be worth it.

On the first new one I ever had I took the advice of the sales man who told me I could hammer it from day one. Worst thing I ever did, the engine developed a major fault at 5000 miles. Before breaking it was drinking 1L of oil every 1000 miles.
The dealer did give me a brend new replacement though.

Keep in mind that a modern car adapts to the driving style of the way it is drove.
