clutch change 1.9d

I have to change the clutch on my Golf mk3 1.9 diesel (1Y engine). Could anybody help me please with a step by step guide and point out any pitfalls I my encounter.
I have changed a clutch before but only on a rear wheel drive car.

Does anybody know if it is possible to change the clutch without the use of a engine hoist.
