A4 1.9tdi with 6speed Multitronic?

Hi All,

I have just today bought an Audi A4 Avant with the 6 speed multitronic gearbox.

Now after scouring the net for info I have seen a fair number of posts saying they are very problematic:eek:.

How bad are they? Are there any tell tale signs I should check for?

I have had 5 Passats over the last few years but wanted an Auto when I came across this and after test driving it had to have, there and then.

It's 2004 (54) with 116k.

Mine has 168k and has had a updated clutch pack (£1k) and possibly now needs a valve case (about £1.3k) although that's up for debate at the mo as I've had conflicting opinions from two specialists. One says it's not the box but a vac leak somewhere, so I'm replacing all the vac pipes next week to see if that sorts it. It's a 2002 car though and otherwise had virtually nothing else done to it, so considering the overall cost of fixing the thing it's not actually that bad. A friend of mine has just spent £2.5k fixing his Vauxhall Corsa!

prior to any diagnosis take a sample of the oil and inspect for glycol
if glycol is present then you have big problems and only a new gear box and radiator will resolve the problem also flush the pipes and flush the atf

glycol is coolant mixing with the mutititronic oil causing slippage etc, once its mixed its game over and only a small % is required to cause irreparable damage

look at input shaft values and clutch amperage also as well as engine running issues

if there are no issues firstly change the oil and change the coolant to g12+++ to reduce any glycol then re adapt the gears box and this should improve operation

After having a read on the net last night I was getting very concerned because there seems to be as you alot of problems with these gearboxes.

I am alot happier now as I just called the Audi dealer who serviced it and it has had a whole new gearbox/ecu/newer clutch etc under warranty @75k

They are mostly referred to as Multicronic or Multitragic,..... that's
how bad they are.
