where is engine number

I have a 1993/4 1.9 turbo diesel engine in my camper, the engine was from a golf, problem is I want to updated the log book with swansea and cant find the engine number, help me please?

It's usually on the engine block, near the join with the gearbox. If you can tell us the year and engine code of the donor vehicle, I expect someone might be able to help with an exact location.
