Hi, 'Once upon a time' etc etc
I apologise in advance for the lengthy post!!!!!!

I have a 2000 S8 with 41,000 miles. Lost reverse gear just before Christmas so time for overhaul! Plus the transfer box was leaking as they usualy do. Took to a gearbox specialist and it was obviously a box out job. While the box was out I told them to look at a slight clunk when changing from 3rd to 4th. which theyn did and it is better now.

They did all the work and I got the car back. After a few days I noticed a reluctance to engage 2nd gear when slowing down to that speed. It was most evident when slowing to turn right or left and then accelerate. When trying to accelerate the car hesitates, seems to misfire very slightly but not always, then there is a clunk and 2nd gear engages but the delay is extremely noticable and dangerous.

I have slowed the car down so it just changes into 2nd gear and then accelerate and have done this 3 or 4 times in quick successsion. The delay becomes more evident and the clunking worse.

Having done the above I stopped the car and looking underneath I saw a fluid leak from the gearbox area. So back to the Gearbox specialist and explained the problems. They replaced the transfer box seal which had failed after only two weeks but they said they were unable to get the car to repeat its 2nd gear antics so hadnt done anything with that at this time.

Their advice was to take the car and if the 2nd gear problem persists then to return and take one of the technicians out to show them. I have had the car for just over a week and the problem with 2nd still persists and when looking under the car last week I could see it is leaking fluid again so it will be going back again!

I will butt heads with specialists and try to resolve the issues but my question is has anyone had a similar downshift problem? The gearbox is under a 6 month/6000 mile warranty but they dont cover electrical/electrionic problems and I suspect they may say that it is not the gearbox but some electrical fault?

Thanks. Trev.
