Hi Guy's,
Looking for a little advise, i'm thinking of converting my automatic (tiptronic) gearbox 2003 passat 1.8t into a manual gearbox car now i know the problems basically lie with the flywheel and pedel box needing to be changed obviously a clutch unit is needed,
what about a gearbox ecu? would this need to be changed and if so would you need to get the ecu from the car you take the gearbox out of

hi mate on older cars its not a bad job but im sure on yours the ECU and gearbox ECU talk to each other, which would make it a very hard mod to do, it would prob be cheaper to sell yours and buy a manual

yeah i would like to sell it, infact i would love to sell it but i've only had it around 6 months and it's on finance, so i still have quite alot to pay off, the warrenty is still valid but the AA warrenty isn't worth the paper it's writton on (will pay upto the first £300 on any claim!!)
so i was thinking of another way around it.
but thanks phil it has answered what i needed (although not the answer i wanted :-)) i will now go and cry lol!! no i will think of something differant i might even talk to the finance company

A manual gearbox does not have a control modul

Seriously Toon, your going to be out a fortune. At a guess, I reckon your going to need :

Obviously.... The gearbox
Flywheel
Clutch
Pedal Box & Pedal
Clutch Master Cylinder
Clutch SlaveCylinder
Clutch Hydrulic Solid Pipe
Clutch Hydrulic Flexable Pipe
Clutch Switch & Wiring Loom ??
Brake / Clutch Fluid Bottle

Maybe I am wrong and talking dog poo but I dont think that its really possible unless you have a donar car or alot of money that you want to waste :)

I know what your saying Bangor lad, it seems a bit daunting on paper,
but it is surprisingly straightforward.

Your friendly breaker will supply the bits and pieces for less than £300,
allow £300 for a box and £400 for DMF and clutch kit. Labour will be
£500. But it will only be tackled by someone with imagination and
who thinks outside the box (pun intended!) they are out there, so
shop around.

And...wait for it.. if your Tip-box is in good working condition,
you could sell it and recoup a grand on it.

Regards
Jim

Thanks for the advise guy's, i'm going to look into this a little harder but i think it is an option, i'm in the trade so i can get most of the parts cheapish
Gearbox i can get one for £75 from local breakers (3 month guarentee)
DMF clutch and flywheel £146.50 cost + 10% (LUK through my work :-))
pedal box (breakers above said around £35-£40)

still need to get prices for the below items:

Clutch Master Cylinder
Clutch SlaveCylinder
Clutch Hydrulic Solid Pipe
Clutch Hydrulic Flexable Pipe
Clutch Switch & Wiring Loom ??
Brake / Clutch Fluid Bottle

i recon i could get most of that new from my local factors at around £200

so around £460 all in, and maybe 1-2 days work with my mate helping me

as i said it's something i will look into, my autobox is ok ISH at the moment (i'm not sure if it's on the way out or just needs a fluid change) but i'm waying up the costs of both, and i can see if it's a viable option which is looking possable at the moment,
thanks for all your help and advise as usual and i'll follow up how i get on

How did you get on. Did you go for a gearbox swap. If so did the progect go well. I am asking because my A6 2.5 tdi autobox has gone bang. I really want a manual box put in. The mechanic doesn't know the exact problem so I feel like a recon box or change it to manual. Manual sounds like a better option. Just need someone to do it.

Hi,
Thanks for the interest, I haven't got around to it yet :Blush2: my autobox hasn't completely let go as yet but i've got all the parts from ebay and a recently refurbished 5 speed gearbox from a guy on ukpassats, all in the parts so far have cost me £374 and i've just got to get the clutch & dmf from work before i do it, as for getting it done any garage could do it for you but it might be costly unless you are good friends can get it done as a cash job.
i'm going to fit mine myself with the help of a good friend (when i get around to it!!) but i believe the job is quite do able just a case of taking your time and before you start making sure you have got everything as there is a few small parts you might forget about (a small list below might help you) but i recon taking our time we should get it done over 2 days.

Gearbox
New brake/clutch fluid bottle and pipework
brake/clutch master cylinder
clutch slave cylinder
clutch and brake pedal box
gear lever with rods attached
gear lever leather gater
gear lever chrome trim
clutch kit and DMF
