I've got what I believe is a 170bhp model (according to VW), but the insurance company tell me it's a 140bhp model. Is there anywhere on the car which will tell me which it is?

Thanks.

There must be other ways but you could phone VW UK customer services armed with your VIN number and get them to confirm?

Does the V5 not tell you the power? Look in your service book and on the sticker you will see a figure in KW, convert this number to BHP using an online converter.

Try something like this...

I confess, I've not tried it myself with recent VINs, but you may be in luck.

You should be able to tell from the plate low on the passenger door pillar

Thanks for the link - I tried it but it didn't work for my VIN.

Thanks to all for your replies.

There was a sticker on the drivers door which I'd missed (!) which stated it was a 170bhp model. However, upon checking with VW, it appears that the car is a 140bhp and was incorrectly labelled. The only real difference (apart from this label - which should have been correct) is that the turbo is different and the ECU is mapped differently.

Oh well - looks like I'll be an extra 1 sec slower 0-60 :(

Not quite as straightforward as that, the 170 also has a modified gearbox, stronger driveshafts and uprated fuel injectors.

Don't forget price difference as well.
